Wifi Upgrades

Next Generation Wireless Coming to UIW

By Brian Anderson

The IT team has begun upgrading the wireless infrastructure across UIW to the new cloud-based controller with WiFi 6 technology. WiFi 6, also known as 802.11ax, offers significant improvements over previous generations of wireless technology. One of the primary benefits is increased speeds over WiFi 5. It also enhances network performance in crowded environments like larger classrooms, conference spaces, and other heavily trafficked areas. Further, it introduces technologies that help improves battery life in WiFi 6-enabled devices, including most phones released in the last 2-3 years. Lastly, WiFi 6 supports communication methods that further boost capacity and performance, making it ideal for high-bandwidth applications like video streaming, next-generation classroom technology like Virtual Reality, and gaming.

The facilities below are part of the first phase of upgrades and were targeted based on the level of use and age of existing equipment. Future phases are in development later for the coming year and beyond to ensure all buildings across UIW are at the WiFi 6 standard or greater.
