UIW's Graduate Support Center (GSC) was selected from among 217 programs from 26 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia as the nation's top program for increasing achievement for Latino students in graduate school. A Blessing of the Animals and Prayer for Creation on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis taught love for all, care of creation, and peacemaking. UIW is part of the Catholic Climate Change national movement "Care for creation. Care for the poor." The UIW community is invited to bring their pets, both live and stuffed, for a blessing of the animals and prayer for creation on Saturday, Oct. 4, 5:30 p.m. at the Grotto. UIW Theatre Dept. presents Gruesome Playground Injuries

The UIW Theatre Dept. presents "Gruesome Playground Injuries." The play chronicles Kayleen and Doug's thirty-year relationship from elementary school through adulthood. It's a relationship marked by personal injuries, sometimes horrific, as the action jumps back and forth in five-year increments. The production will begin Friday, Oct. 3 and run until Saturday, Oct. 11 with various show times in Cheever Theatre. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $8 for non-UIW students, $6 for groups of 10 or more and FREE for UIW students, staff and faculty with use of campus ID. Incarnate Word Sisters in Latin America

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Sr. Teresa Maya will discuss the work of the Incarnate Word Sisters in education and health care in Mexico as well as responding to the needs of the poorest of poor in South America. The discussion will be in Mabee Library Auditorium on Monday, Oct. 6, noon-1 p.m. The event is open to the public. Saudi National Day

The Saudi Student Club at UIW invites the UIW community to celebrate Saudi National Day on Monday, October 6, 2014 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. on Dubuis Lawn. This event is an opportunity for the community to meet UIW's Saudi students and learn about Saudi Arabian culture through a variety of fun activities focusing on different aspects of the life in Saudi Arabia. Also following the Saudi National Day festivities there will be an Eid-Adha celebration in the Rosenberg Sky Room from 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm.   • 4-7 p.m. - UIW National Night Out: Join the UIW community during this year's National Night Out on Dubuis Lawn. Enjoy an evening of games, activities, music and free food as well as receive valuable information on campus safety, healthy living, sexual assault prevention and drug and alcohol awareness. Fundación de Arq. Saul Vara Rivera en Zaragoza, Mexico Presentation

The work and history of the Fundación will be presented by members of the group who are from Zaragoza, Mexico on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 10-11:30 a.m. in Mabee Library Auditorium. Students, faculty, staff and community attendees will learn about the various projects that help the poor as well as learn about ways they can help the foundation. New Website

With the help of more than 100 content editors from across the UIW community, the newly redesigned www.uiw.edu website was recently launched. The new site represents the culmination of more than a year of work; content is now managed using the OU Campus content management system. Email Inbox 60 Day Purge Policy

Email is allowed to remain in the system inbox for up to 60 days on the centrally managed email server (defined as uiwtx.edu). Messages left in the Outlook inbox or system inbox for more than 60 days are purged during a nightly process. The email systems' inbox should not be used for archival storage. The system inbox purge process is necessary to insure there is adequate space to process and deliver all of the system's incoming and outgoing email. This 60-day policy applies to all faculty and staff email accounts. To avoid losing any mail, you can create an Outlook data file to archive your email.

Fall Break air conditioning interruption of service

During Fall Break, Thursday, Oct. 16 and Friday, Oct. 17, the first and second floors of the Administration Building will have no air conditioning due to a new chiller being installed. Please contact Facilities if you have any questions at (210) 829-6023.

 

Working Effectively with First Generation Students
A significant portion of UIW undergraduates are the first in their families to attend college, bringing their particular strengths and weaknesses to the classroom. Participants to this workshop on Friday, Oct. 3, noon-1 p.m. in Admin Building Room 212 will learn characteristics common to many first generation students as well as classroom strategies for uncovering "the hidden curriculum" of higher education. Writing Clinics
Two writing clinics will be held on October 4 and October 18, 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Nursing Building 214. Writing Clinics are informal sessions during which graduate students are welcome to bring class assignments and are able to get one-on-one assistance from the coaches on site or in small peer group reviews. Adobe Acrobat Pro Training Sessions

The Department of Instructional Technology invites faculty and administrative staff to learn how to use Adobe Acrobat Pro. This training is essential for faculty and administrative staff wishing to create interactive online forms. Michael Clayton will teach the courses with assistance from Instructional Technology staff.

Adobe Acrobat Pro software will be taught in three separate sessions, each including a different topic. Sessions and topics will be on the following dates in Admin. Building room 417.

"Sexual Assault in the Military"
As part of the "Films and Conversations About Sexual and Domestic Violence" series presented by the Mabee Library, the award-winning documentary "The Invisible War" will be screened followed by an interactive discussion with Dr. Rosemary Hernandez and Dr. Jane Madison of the San Antonio Vet Center on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 6 p.m. in Mabee Library Auditorium. EAP attends 10th Central Texas College Transfer

Vice President Dr. Cyndi Wilson Porter, Dean Vincent Porter and Center Director Fernando Rodriguez Ramos were in attendance at the 10th Central Texas College Transfer Day in Killeen, Texas; an event that was open to only 500 students. EAP had a special invitation as part of an articulation agreement with CTC.

 

ADCaP and UIW Online Graduate Information Session
Join Extended Academic Programs on Thursday, Oct. 9, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Debbie and Naty Saidoff Center (9160 Guilbeau Road, 78250) for an information session on the Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCaP) and UIW Online programs. The info session will highlight opportunities for adult students to earn a master's degree completely online or at one of the six San Antonio locations. October is Fire Prevention Month.

Below are some key points in the event of a fire:

R.A.C.E. stands for

React to the situation-find the nearest telephone and call 911. Stay calm and answer all the dispatcher's questions.

Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station.

Close doors behind you as you leave the area.

Exit the building using the nearest, safe exit. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS.

Please inform your immediate supervisor if you know of anyone needing assistance. Assemble to designated evacuation points in the event of a fire. Try and take a head count to make sure everyone is accounted for as well as wait for the "all clear" to be given from UIW Campus Police, Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) or emergency response personnel. To view the emergency evacuation map, please visit http://www.uiw.edu/safety/emergencies.html, then go to the Emergency Evacuation Map section and click the link which will direct users to Blackboard. Once logged into blackboard, users will have access to view the map.

Special thanks from the Wyatt Family

My family and I would like to thank everyone for their support, prayers, assistance and kind words during my daughter's battle with cancer. Lyndsey just completed her final treatment and is now officially a Survivor! Many friends were there for us with food, gifts, words of encouragement, etc., and I am very grateful to be part of a community that is so supportive. Lyndsey is looking forward to joining her sister at IWHS and I will be back at my desk soon.

A limited supply of influenza vaccine is available at Health Services. Cost is $25. Please call ext. 6017 to make an appointment for your immunization. With your employee health insurance, the immunization is available at HEB, Walmart, Walgreen's or CVS at no additional charge to you. Check with local pharmacies for availability.

2014 LTW Display Board Contest

Over the last few decades, Americans have been eating out more and cooking at home less often. When you cook at home, you can often make better choices about what and how much you eat and drink than you do when eating out. Cooking can also be a fun activity and a way for you to spend time with family and friends. Get started cooking more often at home; learn more here.

 

Wellness Center Orientation

The UIW Wellness Center will host an orientation session on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 6:45 a.m. where it will introduce faculty and staff to the basics of the facility including weight machines, free weights, treadmills, elliptical trainers and other cardio equipment. Use of the center is free to UIW, IWHS and SACHS faculty and staff with valid UIW, IWHS or SACHS ID. Health Fair/Flu Clinic

The Student National Pharmaceutical Association at the Feik School of Pharmacy will participate in the Carvajal Pharmacy Health Fair/Flu Clinic, Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The event will be held in the pharmacy parking lot at 3410 Roosevelt Ave. (78214). The event will provide free health screenings for blood pressure and glucose as well as brown bag counseling services. The fair will also provide flu shots as follows: trivalent vaccine $20, quadrivalent vaccine $30. Direct billing will be available for patients with insurance.
