12th Annual UIW Veterans Day Celebration – Everyone is Welcome, to Honor All Who Serve
The UIW community will celebrate our 12th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to noon on Dubuis Lawn. Everyone is invited to join the celebration that will feature a talk from UIW student SSGT Jen Lee, a member of the Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), who won a gold medal in hockey at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games (http://www.thewordonline.org/2014/07/man-on-a-mission/). An honor wall video display will feature UIW community members who served in the military. “Love Is A Verb” documentary film and discussion with the three-time Emmy Award Winning Director Terry Spencer Hesser

 “Love Is A Verb” is the first feature-length documentary about the Gϋlen or Hizmet movement and its inspiration the Islamic leaders Fethullah Gϋlen, a man that TIME Magazine named as one of the most influential leaders in the world in 2013. Join three-time Emmy Award Winning Director Terry Spencer Hesser on Wednesday, Nov. 12 for a screening of her documentary at 6:45 p.m. followed by a Q&A discussion, 8-8:30 p.m. in the Rosenberg Sky Room.; registration and reception will precede at  6 p.m.

Spencer Hesser spent three years developing this documentary, where along with her team, traveled to six countries - United States, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Iraq and Somalia - capturing the spirit of the movement through personal stories and interviews. Ashley Judd narrates the film and Awarded BEST DOCUMENTARY at the Maryland Film Festival, Ashley Judd narrates the film. Sr Martha Ann Kirk, who appears in this film while doing research in Iraq, will moderate the discussion. The event is free, but registration is required to hold a seat. Twelfth Night

In Twelfth Night, Shakespeare uses gender-bending disguises, mistaken identities, and bizarre love triangles to twist the action into one of his most delightfully romantic comedy. The UIW Theatre Dept. invites the community to enjoy their latest production beginning Friday, Nov. 14 to Friday, Nov. 21, with 8 p.m. show times in the Elizabeth Huth Coates Theatre. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for Non-UIW students, $8 for groups of 10 or more and $6 for students, faculty and staff with use of their campus ID. OU Campus Editors' Planning Group Meeting

OU Campus Editors, please join the Office of Web Development for the inaugural meeting of the OU Campus Editors' Planning Group on Friday, Nov. 7, 2 p.m. in the Library Auditorium. The group will meet regularly during long semesters guiding web development in suggesting technical enhancements to the content management system, identifying issues with OU Campus and establishing best practices for using the software at the university. HR presents Cardinal Talent!

HR is excited to announce the new online application system, Cardinal Talent!  Cardinal Talent went live Wednesday, Oct. 22. Access to PeopleAdmin will still be available to view applicants that have applied to current vacant positions. Below are training dates and working sessions for the new system.

Information Resources Division will conduct a monthly maintenance beginning Friday, Nov. 14, 11:59 p.m. through Saturday, Nov. 15, 6 p.m.

The following areas will have network switch maintenance causing intermittent network outages on Friday, 11:59 p.m. through Saturday, 6:30 a.m.:

  • Admin Building, Financial Aid Offices
  • Admin Building, Third Floor, South Wing
  • Admin Building, Basement Level, Purchasing Offices
  • IWHS Science Building
  • IWHS LAB Building
  • Wellness Center
  • Dubuis Hall
  • HIT Building
  • Agnese/Sosa, Sixth Floor
  • Watson Apartments

The following buildings will have network switch upgrades causing extended network outages:

The following systems and/or services will be unavailable:

  • Banner - 11:59 p.m.-1 a.m.
    • Accessibility to finance will be limited.
  • Email - 11:59 p.m.-1 a.m.
    • No email from outside of UIW to UIW recipients or from UIW senders to outside recipients will be delivered during the outage window. Messages will be queued and delivered upon service restoration.
  • Argos 1:30-2:30 a.m.
    • Access to Argos will be intermittent during the window.
  • SPSS 3-3:30 a.m.
    • SPSS software will be unavailable.
  • Blackboard – 3:30-6:30 a.m.
    • Access to Blackboard will be limited during the maintenance period to apply patches, update application servers, and update database servers.

The following maintenance work will be performed Saturday, 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

  • UIW Email Environment Relocation
  • Nutmeg File Server Relocation
  • DASH, Tableau service restart

Access to the UIW email environment should not be interrupted during the maintenance window. If access problems occur, please contact the help desk or visit the IRD Maintenance and Outages area on the Information Resources web page at http://uiw.edu/ird for updates.

  • Nutmeg File Server – 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
    • Nutmeg File Server will be moved from the Administration Building Data Center to the Library Data Center. Network file shares will be unavailable during the migration.
  • DASH - 4-4:15 p.m.
    • Tableau server services will be restarted. The DASH server will be unavailable during this period.

Extended Academic Programs 

 

EAP VP serves as off-site reviewer for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Dr. Cyndi Wilson Porter, Vice President for Extended Academic Programs went to Atlanta, Ga. to serve as an off-site reviewer for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  As part of a review cluster, Dr. Porter reviewed the self-study reports for three different institutions.

Construction Area Danger

The UIW community is asked to observe posted warning signs surrounding the Fine Arts construction site. There have been instances of people walking through the gated barricades.  Please note, there are dangerous working conditions and heavy equipment being used, therefore only authorized personnel should be present within the fenced area. 2014 United Way Campaign Kick Off

For over seventy years, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County have funded agencies and programs that reach out to individuals, families and children throughout San Antonio and Bexar County. As a community, UIW/IWHS/SACHS contribute to many local organizations through United Way. No matter how large or small, any contribution will help improve the lives of many San Antonians.

This year's campaign will run the entire month of November and will end on December 1, 2014. Please join us this year in meeting our United Way Goal of $65,000 by submitting your pledge form today!

UIW's pride needs your support! Help give the UIW Cardinal Band their first ever band uniform.

Founded in 2009, the Cardinal Band has already established itself as one of the most visible, energetic spirit organizations on the UIW campus. Comprised of students studying over twenty different majors, the Cardinal Band performs at every home football game, select off-campus performances and annually at Light the Way.

Currently the ensemble rehearses in the Band and Orchestra Hall and in Benson Stadium on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6-8:45 p.m. The band also rehearses on Game Day Saturdays, 9-11:30 a.m. in Benson Stadium. The band typically plays three shows a year as entertainment for the UIW Football Game Day experience.

Rubrics can boost performance by helping learners visualize a successful product or performance. While often associated with writing instruction, rubrics are also good tools for assessing projects, presentations and contributions to group work.
