Rosenberg Sky Room Open House
The McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room will hold an open house on Sunday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 5 p.m. The 2015 theme is “Four Weddings” after the hit TLC show. The Sky Room will be transformed into four different wedding themes showcasing vendors from across San Antonio. There will be free food and drinks. Admission is free with reservation. A Call for Social Justice
The UIW Honors Program presents A Call for Social Justice at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb., 10 in the Mabee Library Auditorium. Students will report and reflect on the people and organizations they witnessed during their three-day trip to the Rio Grande Valley in October 2014. The students traveled to the Valley to learn about the economic and social issues affecting this impoverished area. Students will also add their reflections on the legal issues and other constraints affecting the development of this region. Presentation attendees will find out how they can support these local groups and impact legislation to help residents of the border area help themselves. The event is free and open to the public. Billy Strayhorn Centennial Concert
John Magaldi and the Prime Time Jazz Orchestra (PTJO) will present a concert marking the centennial of the birth of legendary composer Billy Strayhorn on Sunday, Feb. 8 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Jo Long Theatre (Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry, San Antonio, TX 78202). They will perform such Strayhorn-penned standards as Lush Life, Take the A Train, and Something to Live For. PTJO will be conducted by UIW Cardinal Jazz Band Director Jim Waller and will feature vocalist Jacqueline Sotelo, an alumna of UIW and the Cardinal Jazz Band. Several members of the UIW music faculty are members of both the PTJO and Cardinal Jazz Band. Billy Strayhorn's nephew Larry Strayhorn will be the Master of Ceremonies for the concert. Actuarial Science Information Sessions
The Mathematics Department is hosting two information sessions to discuss the new Minor in Actuarial Science on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 4:30 p.m. in the Bonilla Science Hall, Room 120 and Thursday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Bonilla Science Hall, Room 219. Extended Academic Programs
ADCaP and UIW Online Spring Information Session
Join UIW's Extended Academic Programs for an information session on our Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCaP) and UIW Online program on Thursday, February 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Dr. Burton E. Grossman International Conference Center on the UIW campus. UIW will be highlighting opportunities for adult students to earn a bachelor's or master's degree completely online or at one of our six locations in San Antonio. We will feature the nine concentrations available for our Bachelor of Science of Business Administration including Project Management and Social Marketing. The five concentrations in the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice degree will also be detailed.
During the session, you can have your transcripts evaluated, discuss financial aid options, meet with a professor, and receive application assistance from Admission Counselors. Community News
The Center for Veterans Affairs welcomed back our UIW Military Family: active duty, veterans, and military family member students on Jan. 27 in the Special Collections Room (J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library), between 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. for pizza and sodas. They met new friends and spoke with current students about campus life, majors, how to survive finals, etc.
Presidential Teaching Award Nominations 2015
The Provost's Office is requesting nominations for the Presidential Teaching Award. Nominations will be accepted Sunday, Feb. 1 through Saturday, Feb. 28 for the 2015 Presidential Teaching Award. This annual award acknowledges and rewards a full-time faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching that leads to student engagement.
Dr. Agnese presents a $5,000 stipend to the recipient. Recipients become members of the selection committee in succeeding years. Former recipients include Dr. Roger Barnes, William Gokelman, Dr. Neeta Singh, Dr. Bill Carleton, Theresa Tiggeman, Dr. Paul Lewis, Dr. Lydia Andrade, Dr. Jessica Kimmel, Dr. Doug Gilmour and Dr. Brian McBurnett.

iPad User's Group Meeting
During fall break, seven UIW faculty and staff attended a two-day training course called the iPad iFilm Festival. They learned how to create, edit and produce short videos using an iPad, a tripod and a few simple apps. Please join us on Friday, Jan. 30 from 12 – 1 p.m. in Gorman 212 to screen the completed videos and celebrate with the recipient of the Best Video award. 2015 Quirk – Call for Submissions
The Department of English announces the call for submissions for the 2015 issue of Quirk, UIW's literary arts journal. The journal is produced and published annually by UIW students and the Department of English. We are currently seeking outstanding original creative work from UIW students, faculty, and staff, for our next issue! Submit your poetry, short stories, creative essays, and visual arts, including paintings, drawings, photographs and more! Lecture on the Life and Music of Billy Strayhorn
The UIW Music Department presents a lecture on the music and life of Billy Strayhorn on Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. in Seddon Hall. The featured speaker will be Mr. Larry Strayhorn, nephew of the famous composer. Included in the lecture will be recorded excerpts of such Strayhorn standards as Take the A Train, Lush Life, Johnny Come Lately, and Chelsea Bridge. Strayhorn's collaborations with Duke Ellington are legendary. Many of his compositions have become standards and have been recorded by some of America's greatest artists. The latest recording of Lush Life by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga is currently climbing the charts during this centennial year of Strayhorn's birth. The lecture will be given to the Music Department's new Freshmen Seminar Class, but all UIW students and faculty are welcome to attend. Seminar on Humanities Fellowships & Proposal Preparation Strategies
Join the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, in collaboration with Our Lady of the Lake, St. Mary's, and Trinity Universities, in a seminar focusing on successful submissions for humanities fellowships, presented by Alan Rutenberg, JD, Monday, Feb. 2 from 4 – 5 p.m. at Trinity University (Holt Conference Center, on the corner of Shook and Oakmont). Alan will be available to consult individually with those who would like to discuss research plans or proposals in development the following day, Tuesday February 3. In the 9+ years Alan Rutenberg has been at the University of Tennessee, he has led them from unranked to 8th in the nation in the number of NEH long-term fellowships received. UTN has also ranked #1 in NEH Summer Stipend Awards for several years. Alan presents clear, strong strategies for preparing successful proposals as well as approaches to building scholarly agendas that position faculty for external funding. In addition to NEH, Alan has experience preparing proposals for a range of fellowships for research libraries. Making a Micro-Change in Teaching: Improving the First Five Minutes of Class
Join colleagues on Monday, Feb. 2 from 12 – 1 p.m. in AD 212 to share ideas on making the most of the first five minutes. The discussion moderator is Trey Guinn of the Communication Arts Department. In teaching, enriching the first five minutes of class is an area where small changes can have big pay-offs. 2015-16 Internal Faculty Research Awards Applications Deadline
Do you have a research or scholarly project, but just need a little time, money, or an extra hand? Faculty research award applications are now being accepted for the 2015-16 academic year. These awards include: 25% workload release for full-time faculty, up to $3,000 in financial support for research activities, and a two-semester graduate research assistantship. St. Anthony held a School Choice rally at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28 on the SACHS Lang Field. The rally focused on the issue of School Choice, which provides parents the option to choose their child's school, to the community and area legislators. St. Anthony presents Denim & Diamonds Scholarship Gala
Enjoy a night of fun with the St. Anthony community! On Saturday, Feb. 21 St. Anthony presents its annual Denim & Diamonds Scholarship Gala. Proceeds benefit students in need of tuition assistance.
The evening promises to be a fun filled night with food, music, and dancing along with auctions and raffles. Prizes for auction include jewelry, sports memorabilia, Spurs tickets and much more. A Grand Prize Raffle is being held during the evening with $5,000 for the winner and other cash prizes for other winners. Celebrate the Release of the Reach Out Africa Book
Woman's Global Connection invites the UIW community to attend this celebration of the release of Reach Out Africa, co-edited by Sr. Dot Ettling and Dr. Kevin Vichcales, Friday, Jan. 30 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the Twig Bookshop (306 Pearl Parkway, Suite 106, San Antonio, TX 78215). Most of the authors, among them several UIW faculty and PhD graduates, will be on hand to share some of the inspiring and transformational stories of African development projects. WGC Immersion Trip Information Meeting
Immersion trips are a great opportunity for cross-cultural learning and working with the groups the Women's Global Connection serves. An information meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 2 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. in Joyce Building Room 126. We will cover basic information about this summer's immersion trips to Peru and Tanzania, requirements, costs, and the projects in both countries.
