• UIW's red dress fashion show and health fair set for Tuesday, Feb. 10

Rosenberg Sky Room Open House
The McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room will hold an open house on Sunday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 5 p.m.  The 2015 theme is “Four Weddings” after the hit TLC show. The Sky Room will be transformed into four different wedding themes showcasing vendors from across San Antonio. There will be free food and drinks. Admission is free with reservation. A Call for Social Justice
The UIW Honors Program presents A Call for Social Justice at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb., 10 in the Mabee Library Auditorium. Students will report and reflect on the people and organizations they witnessed during their three-day trip to the Rio Grande Valley in October 2014.  The students traveled to the Valley to learn about the economic and social issues affecting this impoverished area. Students will also add their reflections on the legal issues and other constraints affecting the development of this region. Presentation attendees will find out how they can support these local groups and impact legislation to help residents of the border area help themselves. The event is free and open to the public. Billy Strayhorn Centennial Concert
John Magaldi and the Prime Time Jazz Orchestra (PTJO) will present a concert marking the centennial of the birth of legendary composer Billy Strayhorn on Sunday, Feb. 8 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Jo Long Theatre (Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry, San Antonio, TX 78202). They will perform such Strayhorn-penned standards as Lush Life, Take the A Train, and Something to Live For. PTJO will be conducted by UIW Cardinal Jazz Band Director Jim Waller and will feature vocalist Jacqueline Sotelo, an alumna of UIW and the Cardinal Jazz Band. Several members of the UIW music faculty are members of both the PTJO and Cardinal Jazz Band. Billy Strayhorn's nephew Larry Strayhorn will be the Master of Ceremonies for the concert. 12th Annual Red Dress Event & Health Fair
Save the date for the 12th Annual Red Dress Event & Health Fair set for Tuesday, Feb. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Marian Hall Ballroom. This annual event promotes cardiac health in women and features fashions designed by UIW students. In addition, each year fashion faculty and students hand dye scarves sold to benefit the event. Heart Healthy Tips
February is Health Heart Month.  In honor of that, for the next 7 days leading up to the 12^th Annual Red Dress Fashion Show & Health Fair, the committee will share a tip for a healthy lifestyle.  Save the date for the event, set for 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10 in Marian Hall Ballroom.  For more information contact PR at (210) 829-6001. 

Tip #1: Do not skip meals. When you skip meals, it can make you moody and unable to focus. Often, at the next meal you are so famished you make up for those skipped calories and then some!  

Tip #2: Today, have a “water only” day! Don't grab for a soda or juice.  The calories can really add up. Reach for that big tall glass of water- it will keep you hydrated and your waistline will thank you too!

Tip #3: To help stick to your goal of weight loss and better health, when eating out, opt to take half of the entrée home and order a salad with lite dressing to help fill you up during the meal. 

Tip #4: If you haven't made the switch to 1% or skim milk, DO IT!  Whole and 2% milk have a lot of saturated fat and calories that you don't need.

Tip #5: Eat small meals throughout the day. This trains your body to use energy more efficiently.  Large meals train the body to store energy in the form of body fat.

In November 2014, we lost one of our beloved UIW employees, Steve Summers. Steve was our telephone systems administrator. The university community will gathered to remember Steve on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at noon in Our Lady's Chapel with Fr. Thomas Dymowski and Rev.Trevor Alexander presiding over the service.

Presidential Teaching Award Nominations 2015
The Provost's Office is requesting nominations for the Presidential Teaching Award. Nominations will be accepted Sunday, Feb. 1 through Saturday, Feb. 28 for the 2015 Presidential Teaching Award. This annual award acknowledges and rewards a full-time faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching that leads to student engagement.

Dr. Agnese presents a $5,000 stipend to the recipient. Recipients become members of the selection committee in succeeding years. Former recipients include Dr. Roger Barnes, William Gokelman, Dr. Neeta Singh, Dr. Bill Carleton, Theresa Tiggeman, Dr. Paul Lewis, Dr. Lydia Andrade, Dr. Jessica Kimmel, Dr. Doug Gilmour and Dr. Brian McBurnett.

13th Annual Pierre Lecture
Dr. Stacey Floyd-Thomas, an African-American social ethicist at Vanderbilt University, will give a public lecture titled “Invisibility and Silencing Mechanisms: Generational Angst and the Quest for Social Justice” on Thursday, Feb. 19 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the CHRISTUS Heritage Hall at the Village of Incarnate Word (between The Chapel of the Incarnate Word and H-E-B Central Market). The Mabee Library Presents... Farhad's Film Series
The Mabee Library Presents: Brand New You: Makeover Television and the American Dream (53 minutes) on Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 2 – 3 p.m in the Mabee Library, Room 221. The film examines how the interventions featured in makeover shows, from weight loss to cosmetic surgery, reproduce conventional norms of physical attractiveness and success. Taking a wider social and cultural view, it also shows how these programs have become models of self-transformation at precisely the same time jobs have become harder to find and keep, and women and men have been forced to remake themselves to compete in a rapidly changing labor marketplace. 2015-16 Internal Faculty Research Awards Applications Deadline
Do you have a research or scholarly project, but just need a little time, money, or an extra hand? Faculty research award applications are now being accepted for the 2015-16 academic year. These awards include: 25% workload release for full-time faculty, up to $3,000 in financial support for research activities, and a two-semester graduate research assistantship. Learning Community Drop-In
Drop in anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. for a bite to eat and a chance to learn about Learning Communities (LC) at UIW on Wednesday, Feb. 11 in the Administration Building, Room 212. See samples of student work from past LCs, learn about different strategies for pairing two courses, and meet colleagues who might partner with you in an LC. Building a Bridge from Tweets to Journal Articles
Surprisingly, research suggests that college students today read more than they did a few decades ago. However, relatively little of that reading is “long form reading.” Reading strategies that work for short, online texts are often automatic to students, but work poorly for challenging academic or literary texts. An annotated text or two can alert students to the reading strategies needed in university work. Instructors can model effective highlighting and annotation, point out an article's organizational structure, and help with key terms. Crocodoc Personal is a free, online tool that makes it easy to annotate and share any digital text (PDFs and Word documents both work fine). Bring a digital version of an article, short story or other text for one of your courses and annotate it during the session. If you have a laptop, please bring it. Cold drinks will be served.
