Pictured are UIW Nursing Program Instructors Laurie Singel, Dr. Cynthia Purcell and Cynthia Richardson and UIW nursing students at the 2015 Expand Your Horizons event held Saturday, Feb. 7 at UIW.  The annual event, a collaboration between UIW, St. Mary's University and UTSA showcased opportunities in the sciences to over 150 middle schools girls who attended. The girls also participated in 14 workshops, heard two keynote speakers and enjoyed meeting former senator, mayoral candidate and pharmacist Leticia Van De Putte. Special thanks to the 60 college student volunteers and 45 workshop leaders and assistants who helped ensure the success of the event.

EAP holds record attendance at information session

Announcement: Water Outage – Saturday
Please note that on Saturday, Feb. 14, the water will be shut off at 9 a.m. in various buildings on main campus. This outage is expected to last approximately 4 hours.  The water should be restored at approximately 1 p.m.

Bereavement Notice
A memorial service for Mary Acosta will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 14 at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church (111 Barilla, 78209). Mrs. Acosta is mourned by Andrea Cyterski Acosta, UIW dean of enrollment and her husband Bobby Acosta. Mrs. Acosta passed away Tuesday evening surrounded by her family.  Please keep Andrea, Bobby and the Acosta family in your thoughts and prayers. The 13th Annual Pierre Lecture will be given by Dr. Stacey Floyd-Thomas, an African-American social ethicist at Vanderbilt University.  The lecture titled “Invisibility and Silencing Mechanisms: Generational Angst and the Quest for Social Justice” will be held, from 7 – 9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 19 in the CHRISTUS Heritage Hall located at the Village of Incarnate Word (between The Chapel of the Incarnate Word and H-E-B Central Market). The lecture will examine the impact race, religion and education have on the current generation's quest for social justice. On-Site Accreditation Visit for UIW
From Monday, Feb. 23 through Thursday, Feb. 26, 11 guests from our regional accreditors, SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges) will be on main campus to reaffirm UIW's 10-year accreditation.  They will schedule interviews and visits with a wide variety of administrators, faculty, and staff; their private working space during the visit will be in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room.  Everyone is welcome to attend the exit conference to hear a summary of the team's findings, at 9 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, in Special Collections. Presidential Teaching Award Nominations 2015
The Provost's Office is requesting nominations for the Presidential Teaching Award. Nominations will be accepted through Saturday, Feb. 28. This annual award acknowledges and rewards a full-time faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching that leads to student engagement. A $5,000 stipend will be presented by Dr. Agnese to the award recipient who then becomes a member of the selection committee in succeeding years. Sr. Martha Ann Kirk spoke on her research in Iraq as part of a panel "Peaceful and Cohesive Societies for Sustainable Development," at the United Nations, Feb. 11, 2015.  This panel was a side event with the 53rd Session of the Commission for Social Development of the United Nations-Department of Economic and Social Affairs, February 4 to 13, 2015. Participants (L to R) Mehmet Kilic, Global Affairs Director for the Peace Islands Institute; H.E. Ana Gonzalez, director of instructional technology (right), presented the trophy for Best Video to Dr. Zhanbo Yang, professor of mathematics (left). The awards ceremony held Saturday, Jan. 31 was part of the first iPad iFilm Festival. The festival taught UIW faculty the skills needed to create a short video using their iPad. This video could have been an introduction to a course or an instructional video to help students understand a difficult concept.

 

2015-16 Internal Faculty Research Awards Applications Deadline
Do you have a research or scholarly project, but just need a little time, money, or an extra hand? Faculty research award applications are now being accepted for the 2015-16 academic year. These awards include: 25% workload release for full-time faculty, up to $3,000 in financial support for research activities, and a two-semester graduate research assistantship. Grading Student Papers: Burn Less Midnight Oil
Marking papers can take a lot of faculty time, and research suggests that the time invested may do little to improve student writing. This session will try to make paper grading more effective and less of an ordeal. Participants will learn to distinguish more important errors from less important ones, practice using “minimal marking” approaches, and learn strategies for helping students understand and use feedback. If you wish, bring a student paper for use for practice, please remove the student name first.

There will be two sessions led by presenter: Amanda Johnston (WLC).  Both will take place in AD 212.

Enjoy a night of fun with the St. Anthony community! On Saturday, Feb. 21 St. Anthony presents its annual Denim & Diamonds Scholarship Gala.  Proceeds benefit students in need of tuition assistance.

The evening promises to be a fun filled night with food, music, and dancing along with auctions and raffles. Prizes for auction include jewelry, sports memorabilia, Spurs tickets and much more.
