South Texas Alamo Irish Festival
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with The Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas at the Annual South Texas Alamo Irish Festival on Saturday, March 14 from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. at UIW.

Festivities kick off with Donovan's Run 5K at 8:30 a.m. followed by the St. Patrick's Day Parade at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium at 11:30 a.m. The San Antonio Gaelic Athletic Club will host a Football Tournament beginning at 12:30 p.m. Enjoy authentic Irish cuisine and live entertainment, including Ravenmoor, San Antonio Pipe & Drums and Joe Walmsley. Headlining the evening will be the Celtic rock band from Houston, The Blaggards.

Tickets for adults are $5, available only the day of the event at the gates. Admission to the South Texas Alamo Irish Festival is free for faculty, students and staff with a UIW ID. Active duty military with a valid ID and children under 12 are free. Free parking will be available on the campus of UIW. This is a family friendly event.

St. Baldrick's Fundraiser
In conjunction with the March 14 South Texas Alamo Irish Festival, the St. Baldrick's Foundation will be holding a head shaving event to raise funds for childhood cancer research. St. Baldrick's raises millions annually through its shaving events, and the money benefits children's cancer research. Among the honored children at the STAIF event are Zoe Knickerbocker, daughter of director of web development Troy Knickerbocker, who is in treatment for leukemia, and Lyndsey Wyatt, IWHS student and daughter of Director of Veteran's Affairs Karen Wyatt, who was treated last year for osteosarcoma and is now in remission.

Festival of Colors
Join International Affairs and Campus Life in a celebration of Holi and the diversity of UIW on Wednesday, March 18 from 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Dubuis Lawn. Las Hermanas: The Struggle is One
This interdisciplinary symposium from Thursday, March 19 through Saturday, March 21 in the Seddon Recital Hall will honor the history, development and legacy of Las Hermanas, a grassroots Latina movement formed 40 years ago to challenge and change the church and its role in society. The conference promises a rich program, including outstanding keynote speakers, academic papers, sharing of stories, celebration in the spirit of Las Hermanas, and an opportunity to visit the new Heritage Center of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

CABchella
The UIW Campus Activities Board is hosting its annual CABchella event, Wednesday, March 25 from 5 - 10 p.m. in the Natatorium Parking Lot. CABchella is a free event based on a West Coast music festival with local music artists, great attractions, and many festival based accessories and foods. CAB is looking to create this welcoming atmosphere in order to bring students together and enjoy this West Coast experience, while bonding as a campus community. UIW Tech Fair
The 2015 UIW Tech Fair will take place Wednesday, April 1 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Marian Ballroom. Now, in its fifth year, the UIW Tech Fair is a showcase of educational technology, demonstrating how our students, faculty and staff are integrating technology into teaching and learning. Stop by and see the latest in educational technology, listen to informative presentations, enjoy some lunch, and pick up some free goodies. Door prizes will be given away. 118th Annual Meeting of the Texas Academy of Science
UIW School of Math, Science & Engineering will host the 118th Annual Meeting of the Texas Academy of Science Friday, March 6 - Sunday, March 8 on the UIW campus. Over 600 scientists from all over Texas have registered to attend this meeting. There will be 250 oral and poster presentations of their scientific research. The meeting will also honor a Texas Distinguished Scientist and an Outstanding Texas Educator. A professional development session will be held for scientists, and a recruitment session for graduate and professional schools and a panel discussion will be held for students. Scientific vendors will also be on hand to present information about their products and services. The meeting will culminate with an awards banquet, Saturday evening, March 7 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Skyroom. At the banquet students will receive awards on their presentations. Sunday morning, attendees can participate in tours of the Headwaters as well as the UIW Solar House and Broadcast Meteorology facilities. Graduate Writing Institute - Writing Clinic
The Graduate Writing Institute (GWI) is designed to provide graduate students at UIW with an in-depth and personalized approach to the development of professional and academic writing skills. The Dreeben School of Education proudly announces a presentation by Dr. Stephanie A. Grote-Garcia, Sister Theophane Power Chair in Education. Grounded in theories of play and child development Dr. Grote-Garcia's presentation, "Social Media as a 21st Century Playground: An Examination of the Supporting Research, examines the similarities of traditional and virtual play with a specific focus on how both modes prepare individuals for a healthy adult life. Sister Joseph Marie Armer Chair Lecture
The School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering will present the Armer Chair Lecture honoring the memory of Sister Joseph Marie Armer, Thursday, March 26 at 4 p.m. in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Where Rivers Meet: Writer's Workshop
The UIW Music Department & CHASS present Architectures of Poetry and Time: A Three-Day Writer's Workshop from March 27 - 29. Learn to use traditional Japanese poetic forms to write new English-language creative works. This workshop will be led by David Crandall, former professional of the Hosho School of Noh Theater and will culminate in the opening of an exhibit of noh-related items at the Central Branch of the San Antonio Public Library. The workshop and exhibit are part of "Where Rivers Meet," an education and performance project supported by UIW, Theatre Nohgaku, and St. Luke's Episcopal Church & School. Cost to attend is: $150 for general admission, $75 with Student-ID, $20 for UIW students, faculty and staff. The UIW Basketball Team hosted a South Texas Blood and Tissue Center Blood Drive Thursday, March 5 from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. in the Natatorium Parking Lot as a part of the UIW - ACU Challenge. All donors received a pair of basketball tickets to the UIW vs. ACU game on March 5 and a free t-shirt. Donations went towards Maya Sanders. The women's basketball team adopted Maya Sanders last year as a part of Team Impact. Team Impact improves the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. National Athletic Training Month
March is National Athletic Training Month.UIW is staffed with ten Board Certified Athletic Trainers who are medical professionals that evaluate athletic injuries incurred byUIW athletes, deliver emergency and acute care, develop and administer therapy and rehabilitation protocols, direct the return to play protocols for our athletes, liaise with our team physicians and educate our Athletic Training curriculum students. • Miss Fiesta 2015 crowned Thursday

UIW Student Alixzandra Pena is crowned Ms. Fiesta San Antonio 2015
Alixzandra Pena, a senior at UIW in Financial Economics, was crowned Miss Fiesta San Antonio 2015. She was one of 7 finalists who presented a service project aimed at giving back in the community. Alix's service project and passion focuses on helping first-generation high school students' transition into college and graduate. "I'm really excited about promoting my service project throughout the city of San Antonio to help students realize their goals in higher education and have a better future." Alix is a member of the TRIO Student Support Services program and also serves as a Cardinal Community Leader through the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership. She has been active in various student initiatives at UIW and currently serves on the Advisory Board for Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union as a Cardinal Community Leader.

Dr. Caroline Goulet (center), dean of the School of Physical Therapy and Women's Global Connection (WGC) board member, participated in WGC's 2015 Girls Global Summit, Saturday, Feb. 28 in Marian Hall Ballroom. Over 200 young girls aged 10 to 18 attended this annual event. Keynote speaker, WNBA star Marie Ferdinand, shared her journey to the WNBA.

Bereavement Notice
Sr. Sally Mitchell is mourning the loss of her sister-in-law Barbara Mitchell who passed away Sunday, March 1. Women's Global Connection Announcement
Women's Global Connection (WGC) is available to talk to classes or UIW groups on topics related to global citizenry, cross-cultural competencies, and women's empowerment. The mission of this non-profit organization is to promote the learning and leadership of women and girls in the least advantaged regions and countries. The WGC is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and works closely with UIW. WGC currently is offering three part-time, one-year student internships with stipends: a WGC Board internship for undergraduates, plus a WGC Future Leaders of San Antonio internship and a WGC Communications internship for graduate or undergraduate students. UIW Campus Closures
On Saturday, March 7 - March 14, the bridge coming down the hill from Joeris Hall to the Grounds Shop will be closed due to construction. On Saturday, March 14 - there will be an electrical shutdown for 8 hours to the entire ICC building. Join Michael Clayton and Adela Gott for a three-day symposium focusing on the following topics:

• Tuesday, March 10: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.: Adobe Acrobat Pro - If you missed the fall 2014 Adobe Acrobat form management session, here is your chance to attend. Join Michael Clayton as he explains how to plan, design, edit and distribute online forms. The session is open to faculty and administrative staff with a strong background in Microsoft Word.
• Wednesday, March 11: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.: Adobe Photoshop - Adela Gott will explain how to use Photoshop to edit, repair or annotate image files.

Girls' Night Out Event with Marian Jordan Ellis
On Wednesday, March 18 at 8 p.m. in the Rosenberg Sky Room, The Sisterhood of UIW, a new women's student organization, is bringing author and speaker, Marian Jordan Ellis to the University of the Incarnate Word to host a Girl's Night Out Event. At this event, Marian will talk about her book: "Sex and the City Uncovered," which helps women turn from coping with life through "hook-ups, hang-overs, and heartbreaks" to coping with life through true love found in God. The Girls' Night Out Event is open to women from all universities and groups in the San Antonio area, and the cost of attendance is free. Door prizes will be awarded at this event. UIW Presents Award-Winning Author Farnoosh Moshiri
Come and experience the award-winning author Farnoosh Moshiri on Thursday, March 19 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. in the Mabee Library Auditorium. Moshiri is the author of four novels and a collection of short stories. She is the recipient of Barthelme Memorial Award, C. Glenn Cambor/Inprint Fellowship, two Barbara Deming Awards for writing of peace and social justice; two consecutive Black Heron Awards for Social Fiction, and Valiente (courage) Award from Voices Breaking Boundaries.

She has taught literature, playwriting, and creative writing in Universities of Tehran, Kabul, Houston, and Syracuse. Currently she is teaching at the University of Houston-Downtown and working on a new novel. Her latest novel and others are available at her website: www.farnooshmoshiri.net and also at Amazon.com. Faculty Focus

Why Won't They Talk? Helping English Language Learning Students Participate in Class
New international students sometimes find the American classroom a bit of a shock. The cultural norms frequently differ radically from what they have previously experienced. These students, often outstanding, English students at home—sometimes find that their oral English is not as strong as they had believed. As a result, they may retreat into silence. Participants will learn practical strategies for engaging English Language Learning (ELL) students in class activities. These approaches can also help draw more reticent native speakers into class discussion, too.

Faculty Forum
All full-time faculty are invited to discuss the proposed changes to the Faculty Handbook which involve the addition of a College/School Rank and Tenure Committee to each school/college, and the a specific process for including these committees into third year review and the promotion and tenure process for full-time faculty on Monday, March 16 from 12 - 1 p.m. in the Mabee Library Auditorium. A proposed change to the Faculty Senate Bylaws, adding a process for promotion to Senior Instructor, will also be discussed. There will be a short presentation and a question and answer period. 2015-16 Internal Faculty Research Awards Applications Deadline
Do you have a research or scholarly project, but just need a little time, money, or an extra hand? Faculty research award applications are now being accepted for the 2015-16 academic year. These awards include: 25% workload release for full-time faculty, up to $3,000 in financial support for research activities, and a two-semester graduate research assistantship.
