Writing Reunion
Did you attend Barbara Walvoord's workshop on teaching writing last May? Join with colleagues to discuss how you implemented ideas from the workshop. Participants will have an opportunity to share what worked, what didn't, and what can be tweaked. Even if you didn't attend the May workshop, this informal session should give you lots of ideas for using writing to teach your content, for designing writing activities, and for responding to student writing.

Randall Griffiths (Sports Management) Thursday, March 19 (4:30 – 5:30 p.m. with wine/cheese) in AD 212. Register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CTLSpring2015. For more information, contact Kathy Allwein at (210) 283-6359 or kallwein@uiwtx.edu.

Oh What a Tangled Web They Weave: Helping Students Write Clearer Sentences
We've all read them—sentences of mind-numbing complexity that collapse into a heap of grammatical errors. In his perennially popular book, Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace, Joseph Williams offers specific lessons for producing clear sentences. Instead of giving advice like “be specific” or “be clear,” Williams presents actual procedures for producing clear writing. In this session, participants will learn Williams's first lesson for clarity. It's easy to teach to students, and it's easy to apply to our own writing, too. First 10 faculty participants teaching undergraduate level courses will receive a Title V stipend of $100.

Presenters: Amanda Johnston (WLC) and Susan Hall (CTL) on Monday, March 23 (4:30 – 5:30 p.m. with wine and cheese) or Thursday, March 26 (8 – 9 a.m. with breakfast) in AD 212. Register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CTLSpring2015. For more information, contact Dr. Susan Hall (hall@uiwtx.edu or 283-5030) or Kathy Allwein (kallwein@uiwtx.edu or 283-6359).

National Weather Service SKYWARN Spotter Training
The Austin-San Antonio National Weather Service Office offers Skywarn severe weather training throughout year. Most Skywarn trainings are conducted in the spring to coincide with severe weather season and allow citizens, first responders, emergency management, amateur radio operators, and volunteer organizations the opportunity to learn about severe weather preparedness and safety. Scheduled trainings are free and open to the general public. There is no pre-registration unless specifically noted on the schedule or link. This semester's training is on Saturday, March 28 from 8 – 11:30 a.m. in the Bonilla Science Hall, Room 129.

After training is complete, usually 1.5 hours for the BASIC training, you will be an official weather spotter for the National Weather Service. Real time reports to our office can save lives and property. Post storm reports can help us find severe weather damage, tornado tracks, and verify severe weather warnings. For more information, contact Jose Lerma at (210) 884-5261 or jalerma1@student.uiwtx.edu.
