Celebrating Heritage Week
UIW Recalls Its Heritage and Mission: The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and the University of the Incarnate Word value the Catholic tradition that proclaims the spirit of community calling us, as members of the Body of Christ, to respond to one another's needs. This tradition relies on God's presence among us, attested by Christ's resurrection, which gives us the strength and the courage to meet life's difficulties.

Alumni Memorial Mass

Almost, Maine
The UIW Theatre Department presents John Cariani's romantic comedy, "Almost, Maine". The scene design is by Christopher McCollum, lighting design is by Justin Bennett, and the costume design is by Margaret Mitchell. Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for senior citizens, $8 for non-UIW students, $6 for groups of 10 or more and free for UIW faculty, staff and students with their valid UIW ID. Dodge for a Cure
Cardinals for Kids (CFK) will be having a dodge ball tournament to raise money for the Children's Hospital of San Antonio Foundation from 5:30 - 11 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9 at the Cervera Wellness Center. All UIW students are encouraged to attend along with students from Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary's University and the University of Texas at Austin. We hope for a fun night filled with music and dodging! The fee is $5 per person and there is a minimum at 7 players per team, but no more than 10 players per team. Play Day for Peace
Dr. Mary Ruth Moore and Dr. Stephanie Grote-Garcia will facilitate this fun event, while their pre-service teachers design and perform activities around the theme, "We're Wild About Animals." Annual Water Show and Silent Auction: Best of Broadway
Come and view two water shows set to the theme of The Best of Broadway. You will see the UIW Synchronized Swim Team and the two local clubs perform. The times of the shows are 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Ann Barshop Natatorium. Doors will open early for the silent auction for each show. UIW iPad iFilm Festival
The Second Annual UIW iPad iFilm Festival will take place from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15 and Friday, Oct. 16 in the Administration Building, Room 417.

Learn the skills needed to create a short video using your iPad. Subject-matter experts guide you through production process. From Friday, Oct. 16 until Thursday, Nov. 5, Adela Gott and Terry Peak will be available to help you complete your video. Participants are invited to premiere their video at the iFilm Showcase and Awards ceremony at 12 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6 in the Gorman Building, Room 212. All videos will be entered in the awards competition and featured at the 2016 Tech Fair!

To help you complete your video, entrants will receive:

• An iPad tripod mount, a tripod, video lens, and microphone
• All software (Movie Pro & Explain Everything)
• Lunch is on us as well

Seating is limited to eight participants, and all participants will need an iPad 2 or newer. An Evening with Azar Nafisi
Sr. Kathleen Coughlin, vice president for institutional advancement, with the San Antonio Public Library Foundation, is sponsoring an event at 5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 18 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. Azar Nafisi, bestselling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran, will be conducting a book reading and talk, and this event is free! She will also be presenting her new book, The Republic of Imagination. Books are available for purchase if anyone wants a signed copy. All students, faculty, staff and administrators are welcome. Immediately following at 6 p.m. is a cocktail reception and dinner with the author. Tickets and table sponsorships are available. Arts & Music Festival
We are accepting visual and wearable art donations for the 6th annual UIW Arts and Music Festival now through Monday, Oct. 19. These can be paintings, sketches, designs, sculptures, jewelry or other manifestations of your creativity. Donations will be displayed in the library in the weeks preceding the festival so the sooner we receive it the better. Journey of Hope...From Violence to Healing
The family members of murder victims will speak of their experiences and why they now stand for alternatives to the death penalty from 3 - 4:15 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20 in the Mabee Library Auditorium. Journey "storytellers" come from all walks of life and represent the full spectrum and diversity of faith, color and economic situation. They are real people who know first-hand the aftermath of the insanity and horror of murder. They recount their tragedies and their struggles to heal as a way of opening dialogue on the death penalty. The Journey spotlights murder victim's family members who choose not to seek revenge, and instead select the path of love and compassion for all of humanity. They presented a poster titled "Technology for Advancing Pedagogical Reasoning" on Friday and also lead a 45 minute presentation titled: "Promoting Student Learning with Effective Instructional Technology: Formative Assessment" to about 50+ attendees.

Legacy Student Sustainability Scholars
The Ettling Center for Civic Leadership in coordination with the Office of Sustainability and UIW's Student Government Association is looking for applicants for the 2015-2016 Legacy Sustainability Scholars. The purpose of the Legacy Sustainability Scholars is to maintain, support, promote and bring awareness to UIW and the San Antonio community of the balance of human development and growth with the welfare of the natural world, both in the present and for the future. Selected applicants will be required to conduct a total of 50 hours of sustainable service per semester, which will include the maintenance of the UIW Campus Gardens. Healthcare Response to Human Trafficking
Healthcare providers are often the first to encounter trafficking victims. Learning and Low-Stakes Quizzes
Research into "the testing effect" suggests that answering questions about material is one of the most effective ways to study it. Participants will discuss ways to apply this promising research and explore efficient ways to incorporate frequent low-stakes quizzes into their courses. There will be two sessions available to attend. The first session will be from 12 - 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12 in the Administration Building, Room 212. Lunch will be served at this session. Due to Heritage Day events on Oct. 7, the second session will be preempted and rescheduled as soon as dates and times become available.
