Join UIW's Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and University Mission & Ministry as we honor the fall seniors, who have been a light on and off campus, and have them “pass their light” to the remaining classes at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13 on the McDermott Convocation steps. Blessing by Fr. Reckless
The UIW Department of Theatre Arts invites you to Reckless, a whacky and somewhat dark comedy by Craig Lucas. Doctoral Student Research Symposium

Winter's Eve Gala
Join Cardinals for Kids and the UIW community for The Winter's Eve Gala from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 19 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. The gala benefits the Children's Hospital of San Antonio Foundation and includes a cocktail hour, silent auction and dinner. The evening honors Dr. Richard Wayne. UIW Cardinal Jazz Band Concert
The UIW Cardinal Jazz Band's last concert of the fall semester is from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 19 in the UIW Music Building Concert Hall. They will be performing for the first time in the new UIW Concert Hall and will feature special guests Kyle Keener and Polly Harrison. Keener and Harrison are UIW alumni and have a musical group called Small World that has been a staple of the San Antonio music scene for more than 30 years. Supporting Muslim Students On Campus: Dispel Myths, Address Islamophobia and Break Barriers
Underscored by past events, there is a need for schools to educate all on Islam, build positive relationships, and value diversity. This session from 12:15 – 1:45 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20 in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room will use a webinar on Islamophobia and brief discussion afterward. Light the Way: O Tannenbaum
Join the UIW family to celebrate the time honored holiday tradition of “O Tannenbaum” as we kick off the holidays with one of the most anticipated events of the season at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21 in Benson Stadium. The program will feature several fan favorites including Tejano superstar Patsy Torres, the talent of the UIW Cardinal Chorale, the UIW Marching Cardinals and Spirit Team plus the performing groups of UIW's Brainpower Connection schools.  

The evening will culminate with the flip of a switch to deck the UIW campus with nearly a million twinkling Christmas lights. Guests are invited to join the candlelight procession through campus led by Mariachi Las Coronelas to Dubuis Lawn for a complimentary hot chocolate reception. Cardinal Spotlight

Football Fan Bus – Houston Baptist University
The UIW Cardinals Club is offering a bus trip to the Cardinals final football game of the season against Houston Baptist University on Saturday, Nov. 21. The $50 package includes round-trip transportation from UIW to the game in Houston, Texas, a lower level ticket, breakfast and refreshments on the bus. The bus will depart from the McDermott Convocation Center at 8 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 21 and return the same day. The bus will leave Houston 30 minutes following the conclusion of the game. Men and Women's Basketball Home Opener
UIW Cardinals Men's and Women's Basketball will tip off the 2015-2016 seasons as they play host to the LSU-Alexandria Generals and Texas Lutheran Bulldogs at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13. In the McDermott Convocation Center. The Cardinals Club will be hosting an All-Night tailgate party beginning at 5 p.m. for UIW students, faculty, staff, and fans. Game ticket for the basketball games is required for the tailgate party. The tailgate part will last all-night leading into the UIW vs. Lamar football game. Fan Appreciation Cookout
The UIW Athletics Cardinals Club, along with the Student Athlete Advisor Council is set to host Fan Appreciation Cookout from 5 – 10:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13 in front of McDermott Convocation Center. The event is FREE and OPEN to the public. Attendees will be treated to free hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, water, and soft drinks. UIW Football Military Appreciation Day

2015 dr. gilberto hinojosa native american month presentation

Dr. Gilberto Hinojosa gave a Native American Month presentation titled, "Cultural Interaction - Native American Texas & Spanish Texas" in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room this week. 

UIW Highlight

Native American Heritage Month Exhibit
November is Native American Heritage Month.  Please take time to visit the display case on the first floor of the AT&T Science Building to see an exhibit of Native American artifacts and books placed there by members of the Native American Heritage Month Committee.  The exhibit will be up through the first week of December.  For more info, contact Dr. Richard Peigler at peigler@uiwtx.edu or (210) 829-3832.

Call for Service Learning Pictures and Stories – Ettling Center for Civic Leadership
The Ettling Center for Civic Engagement would like to collect some stories and pictures of service learning projects that could be used to encourage others in service learning.  Please send brief and informal descriptions of three sentences to a page and a picture or two if you have them to the ECCL Faculty Liaison Sr. Martha Ann Kirk at kirk@uiwtx.edu.  When faculty put what they have done in the Sedona form, there is now a MISSION CODE where one can select SL for Service Learning and report service learning projects. Documenting these for the last five years can help UIW to earn Carnegie recognition for service leadership.  

UIW Fashion Management Program Develops Official Tartan
After years of hard work, the UIW Fashion Management Program has developed the official tartan (plaid) for UIW. They felt it was important to incorporate the founding Sisters in the plaid design.  The three white lines that are together on the plaid represent the founding Sisters. Several versions of the plaid were developed.  The fashion faculty narrowed it down to 3 designs. Luxury scarves and satin ties can be purchased at this link. A portion of the money from the sales of the tartan items will be returned to the Fashion Management Program to fund scholarships.

2015 United Way Campaign

Cup Runneth Over
TRiO Student Support Services will once again work with women and families in transition by collecting and assembling cup care packages.“Cup Runneth Over” is a way in which the faculty, administrators and staff can give something back to those experiencing difficulties in their lives. Collection of items run until 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16. Please consider donating the following items in good condition:

  • Hotel toiletries
  • Toothbrushes and small toothpastes
  • Individually wrapped tea bags or packets of hot chocolate

Successful performance on the HSPT test can be the gateway to an outstanding high school education for your middle school child. St. Anthony Catholic High School offers convenient, high quality prep courses for the HSPT high school admission test. Taught by the St. Anthony counseling department, the courses use practice material carefully chosen to provide students with:

  1. Effective strategies to help them cope with math and verbal problems
  2. Extensive practice with the HSPT
  3. Foundation necessary to boost confidence

We will help students to increase their scores by preparing them with the test-taking skills necessary to read and solve problems efficiently and accurately. Students will learn strategies to increase their scores by eliminating incorrect answers and by making wise educated deductions.

Commissioning Service: Peru Immersion Trip
Please join Women's Global Connection at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13 in the Incarnate Word Generalate Chapel for a special ceremony to prayerfully send off the WGC Immersion Trip travelers to Peru. For two weeks in December, trip participants will serve alongside Incarnate Word missionaries to promote and strengthen CCVI ministries and WGC programs in Chimbote, Peru. WGC is hosting 8 community members, UIW faculty and students on the trip and 13 others are traveling to Peru as part of the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership. Thank you for all your support. WGC Alternative Giving Program

Women's Global Connection continues to offer its Alternative Giving Program, which many in the UIW community have supported over the years, especially at holiday time.  Children in Zambia who would not have an opportunity to attend preschool have been able to do so, preschool teachers in Peru have received training, women in Tanzania have received animal grants to expand grass roots businesses and use their profits to send their children to school.  You can also help build a village rainwater harvester or purchase other clean water options as part of the Dr. Patricia Lieveld Water Project in Bukoba, Tanzania.  The Srs.
