Delia Meyer, instructor in the nursing program, emceed the 2016 Red Dress Health Fair & Fashion Show Tuesday, Feb. 2 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. This annual event brings awareness to women's cardiac health and featured one-of-a-kind dress designs by UIW fashion students.

2016 Asian New Year Celebration
Join the UIW community for the annual Asian New Year Celebration from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. The Asian New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the lunar calendar. The New Year festivities, traditionally begins on the first day of the month and continues until the fifteenth, when the moon is brightest. This year is the Year of the Monkey. 2016 Literacy Summit: Celebrating 20 Years of What's Hot in Research and Practice
The Dreeben School of Education (DSE) will host the 2016 Literacy Summit on Friday, Feb. 12 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room and Saturday, Feb. 13 in the UIW Music Building. This National event will be co-sponsored by the DSE, the Texas Association for Literacy Education, and the Specialized Literacy Professionals. Over 300 educators, literacy researchers, and pre-service teachers are expected to attend. Attendees will receive 10 CPE hours. The theme of the Summit is Literacy Research and Practice ― Celebrating 20 Years of What's Hot. Presentation topics will include the following:

• Literacy Coaches/Reading Specialists
• Implementing State Standards
• English Language Learners
• Close Reading and Text Complexity
• Academic Writing/Writing from Sources
• Struggling Readers
• Comprehension
• Vocabulary
• Motivation
• Teacher Preparation and Evaluation for Literacy

• New Literacies and Digital Literacies

The keynote speakers hold a wealth of experience about literacy instruction. Many are past-presidents of the International Literacy Association (ILA) and several have been inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame. Keynote speakers include Dr. Jill Lewis-Spector, Dr. Donald J. Leu, Dr. Linda Gambrell, Dr. Jack Cassidy, Dr. Stephanie Grote-Garcia, Dr. Evan Orlieb, Dr. Estanislado S. Barrera IV, Dr. Victoria Risko, Marcie Craig Post, and Guadalupe Garcia McCall (award-winning children's author). In addition, the Summit will feature children's authors Jonathan Rand, Sonia Gensler, and John Micklos, Jr. Attendees of the summit will have the opportunity to choose from over 130 presentations (i.e., 30-minute sessions, round-table discussions, and poster sessions) and to visit with vendors. UIW Highlight

• Danger did not drive us out of Peru - Global Sisters Report

Dr. Jeff Crane, associate dean of CHASS, along with UIW faculty and students, assisted children in the community with the revitalization and expansion of the Ella Austin Community Center garden Friday, Jan. 29.

Dr. Zeki Saritoprak, professor and the Bediüzzaman Nursi Chair in Islamic Studies at John Carroll University in Cleveland, presented "Jesus in Islam," Monday, Feb. 1 at the ICC co-sponsored by UIW Religious Studies and the Dialogue Institute.

Dean of Nursing and Health Professions Dr. Mary Hoke cut the ribbon to the new UIW Nursing Cardinal Wellness Center with the help of Sr. Joan Holden, CCVI on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at the Bowden Eye and Health Center.

UIW Provost Dr. Kathi Light introduced the UIW community to the OLLU Moody Professor Dr. Kathryn Anderson Lecture Thursday, Feb. 3. Dr. Anderson has conducted research over the last 25 years on situational and personality factors that cause aggression and violence and has recently focused on violence prevention and intervention.

"Survival Mindset" Information Session
The UIW Police Department and Environmental Health Safety & Risk Management will be hosting "Survival Mindset" information session. These information sessions are an overview of the original 4-hour class.

About the Training:

The current presentation teaches and promotes the "Run, Hide, Fight" concept. In today's world, each and every one of us must be responsible for our own personal safety and security. The concepts and ideas presented are not campus specific; they apply in any environment the participant may find themselves.

Each session is scheduled for 2 hours. The presentation is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, leaving 30 minutes for questions and answers. The sessions during the Spring 2016 semester will be held in the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Seating is limited to 30 participants per session. Email colunga@uiwtx.edu if you wish to attend one of the 16 sessions listed below. Please include the date of the session you wish to attend.

Be The Match Bone Marrow Drive
The Pre-Pharmacy Association hosts this event from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17 at the circle area between the Wellness Center and the AT&T Science Center in an effort to increase awareness and sign up committed prospective donors for this cause. At PPA's 2014 Bone Marrow Drive held at UIW, a match was made by a current UIW student who followed through, donating his bone marrow to a ten-year-old child last year, resulting in saving this child's life. The Pre-Pharmacy Association is completely committed to this cause and invites the UIW family and friends to get involved. The 2016 CCVI Spirit Awards Nominations
Faculty, administration, staff and students are invited to submit one or more nominations. Nominations made in previous years for persons who were not selected will be reconsidered each year. If in any year the Selection Committee determines that no suitable candidate has been proposed, the award will not be given out that year. Student Reading: Can't They? Don't They? Won't They?
Many of us have asked ourselves these questions after making a reading assignment. Reading research points out that how we interact with students before, during, and after a reading assignment can bolster their comprehension; however, many instructors help students grapple with a text only after the reading has supposedly been completed. Participants in this workshop will learn simple and practical ways to shift some of their instruction to the earlier phases of the reading process. The first five participants to register for each session will receive a copy of John Bean's Engaging Ideas. From 12 - 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17 (lunch) in the Administration Building, Room 155, and from 8 - 9 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 18 (breakfast) in the Administration Building, Room 212.
