24-Hour Pray-a-thon
Join University Mission and Ministry in our 7th annual 24-hour Pray-a-thon. The tradition began in 2009 when one of our students wanted to find a way to more fully engage individuals, student organizations and university departments with the spirit of the season. While, rooted in our Catholic identity, we celebrate our diverse faith community, as we use these 24 hours to immerse participants into deeper prayer in anticipation of Easter. 2016 Literacy Summit: Celebrating 20 Years of What's Hot in Research and Practice
The Dreeben School of Education (DSE) will host the 2016 Literacy Summit on Friday, Feb. 12 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room and Saturday, Feb. 13 in the UIW Music Building. This National event will be co-sponsored by the DSE, the Texas Association for Literacy Education, and the Specialized Literacy Professionals. Over 300 educators, literacy researchers, and pre-service teachers are expected to attend. Attendees will receive 10 CPE hours. The theme of the Summit is Literacy Research and Practice ― Celebrating 20 Years of What’s Hot. Presentation topics will include the following:

Leu, Dr. Linda Gambrell, Dr. Jack Cassidy, Dr. Stephanie Grote-Garcia, Dr. Evan Orlieb, Dr. Estanislado S. Barrera IV, Dr. Victoria Risko, Marcie Craig Post, and Guadalupe Garcia McCall (award-winning children’s author). The House of Bernarda Alba
The UIW Department of Theatre Arts invites you to The House of Bernarda Alba. A gem of a play from one of the best Spanish playwrights, Federico Garcia Lorca shows us what the consequences of fear, jealousy, hegemony, and desire can be. White Coat 5K
The second annual White Coat 5K will be held from 9 – 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 20 on the UIW Campus. Sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists and the National Community Pharmacists Association, the race will benefit the American Heart Association. This event is open to the public. Those in the healthcare field are encouraged to participate while wearing their white lab coat. There is a $25 registration fee. Panel Discussion: "The Past, the Influence, The Future"
Various Leaders from the African American community will discuss various issues concerning the black community at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25 in the UIW Music Building Concert Hall. Each leader is well respected in the African American community and can speak with passion and conviction about their subject matter. We will examine the past. What are some of the issues of the past that we are still experiencing? We will take an analytical look at some of the circumstances that are influencing our communities today and then look at solutions for a brighter future. Our keynote speaker, Roni Dean-Burren, author and national speaker, will open the event with her comments and then various panelists will respond. 2016 rosenberg school of optometry valentine's day

February is Low Vision Awareness Month, and in a collaborative effort promote information on this topic and celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Rosenberg School of Optometry Library and the Low Vision & Rehab Optometry Student Organization gathered to make tactile Valentine’s Day cards for the employees of The San Antonio Lighthouse.  First, second and third year optometry students, Vision Science students along with faculty and staff gathered to create over 200 tactile Valentine’s Day cards. Some in braille, some with big 3-D stickers, and others with brightly glittered glues and pop-up origami designs, but all of them with love. The San Antonio Lighthouse empowers the blind and visually impaired, and serves as a clinical rotation for the Rosenberg School of Optometry. Paula Gold-Williams Talk
Please join the Women Gender Studies class and the School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering for a discussion with Paula Gold-Williams from 12 – 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17 in the Mabee Library Auditorium to learn what it takes to be a success in business today. Paula Gold-Williams has served the San Antonio community in a variety of business positions. She worked as the Regional Controller at Time Warner Cable, the V.P of Finance for Luby’s, Inc., and began her career with CPS Energy in 2004 where she has held several leadership positions. In November 2015, when Doyle Beneby announced his plans to leave, CPS’s Board of Trustees designated Paula as the Interim CEO, to provide solid organization and strategic stability during the company’s transition. “Survival Mindset” Information Session
The UIW Police Department and Environmental Health Safety & Risk Management will be hosting “Survival Mindset” information session. These information sessions are an overview of the original 4-hour class.

About the Training: 

The current presentation teaches and promotes the “Run, Hide, Fight” concept.  In today’s world, each and every one of us must be responsible for our own personal safety and security.  The concepts and ideas presented are not campus specific; they apply in any environment the participant may find themselves.

Each session is scheduled for 2 hours. The presentation is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, leaving 30 minutes for questions and answers. The sessions during the Spring 2016 semester will be held in the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Seating is limited to 30 participants per session. Email if you wish to attend one of the 16 sessions listed below. Please include the date of the session you wish to attend.

Be The Match Bone Marrow Drive
The Pre-Pharmacy Association hosts this event from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17 and Thursday, Feb. 18 at the circle area between the Wellness Center and the AT&T Science Center in an effort to increase awareness and sign up committed prospective donors for this cause. At PPA's 2014 Bone Marrow Drive held at UIW, a match was made by a current UIW student who followed through, donating his bone marrow to a ten-year-old child last year, resulting in saving this child's life. Student Reading: Can't They? Don't They? Won't They?
Many of us have asked ourselves these questions after making a reading assignment. Reading research points out that how we interact with students before, during, and after a reading assignment can bolster their comprehension; however, many instructors help students grapple with a text only after the reading has supposedly been completed. Participants in this workshop will learn simple and practical ways to shift some of their instruction to the earlier phases of the reading process. The first five participants to register for each session will receive a copy of John Bean’s Engaging Ideas. UIW Template Workshop
The UIW Instructional Technology team is developing a brand new Blackboard course shell for the main campus courses. The shell will include pre-formatted content for hybrid, online, and face-to-face courses.

Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 17 and continuing through the end of April, Instructional Technology will be previewing the template for faculty and staff providing an opportunity for both faculty input and training on how to integrate the shell with your Blackboard courses.
