24-Hour Pray-a-thon
Join University Mission and Ministry for the 7th annual 24-hour Pray-a-thon. The tradition began in 2009 when one of our students wanted to find a way to more fully engage individuals, student organizations and university departments with the spirit of the season. While, rooted in our Catholic identity, we celebrate our diverse faith community, as we use these 24 hours to immerse participants into deeper prayer in anticipation of Easter. For more info, contact (210) 829-3128 or dimas@uiwtx.edu. Pictured above with a cutout of Pope Francis and UIW students is Beth Villarreal, director of campus ministry.

The daily tradition of "Compline" of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, dates as far back as 1867 even before the establishment of the Incarnate Word College in 1886. The Sisters would gather for Vespers each afternoon when they returned to the convent from teaching in the parish and local schools and helping in the hospitals. After the Vespers are finished, the Sisters would reflect and spend time with each other over tea and bread or cookies. At one time, the location for "tea time"-(compline) was in the current location of Hortencia's. For more info, contact Dr. Ricardo Gonzalez at (210) 283-6423 or rigonza4@uiwtx.edu.

Backchannel Communication: Maybe the Rest of the Class Will Talk
In many college classes, a handful of students do most of the talking, so tools that can entice the rest of the class to participate are welcome. A backchannel is a digital conversation than occurs during a face-to-face event. During a class session, a backchannel tool such as TodaysMeet or Padlet can encourage students who might otherwise remain uninvolved to pose questions and make comments. Participants in this class will learn the major features of TodaysMeet and discuss ways instructors can integrate a backchannel into a class session. Please bring a digital device of your choice. One participant at each session will win a Kindle Fire. The first session is from 12 - 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 23 (lunch) in the Administration Building, Room 155, and from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24 (wine and cheese) in the Administration Building, Room 212.
