Angels Among Us
Angels Among Us is an art exhibition by Martin Emmanuel Rangel and Victor Hugo De La Fuente, two emerging artists. The opening reception is from 6 - 9 p.m., Friday, March 4 in the Kelso Art Gallery. Girls Global Summit
The Women's Global Connection (WGC) is excited to announce the 4th annual Girls Global Summit from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Saturday, March 5 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room as the Women's History Month event. The event features presentations and discussions led by teams of female high school students about issues facing girls around the globe today. More than 200 girls from over 20 area middle and high schools are expected to participate. We encourage faculty, staff, students and family members to attend to listen and engage with the presenters (event attendance is appropriate for anyone middle school age or older). Women and Water Conservation
This Women's History Month lecture is from 9 - 10:15 a.m., Monday, March 7 in the Ingrid Seddon Recital Hall. Dana Nichols has a background of helping disadvantaged women in Guatemala and is a specialist in water conservation. She works with SAWS and will speak on the history of water and water conservation in San Antonio. She will address the number of women working in the field of water conservation today. Summer Camps Mandatory Meeting
UIW will be holding its annual "mandatory" summer camp meeting from 2 - 4 p.m. Monday, March 7 in the Mabee Library Auditorium. 14th Annual Pierre Lecture
As part of the university's on-going effort to engage with the realities of climate change raised in Pope Francis's recent encyclical, Laudato Si', the Religious Studies Department will host a lecture by theologian Colleen Mary Carpenter, Ph.D., of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN from 7 - 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 8 in the CHRISTUS Heritage Hall. Dr. Carpenter will take up the pope's call for our ecological conversion by presenting the possibilities of a forest spirituality, grounded in the human relationship with the landscape of the forest. The Good, the Bad and the Feminine: Women in the Narrative of Harry Potter
This Women's History Month lecture is at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 9 in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Dr. Emily Clark of the UIW English Department and Dr. Michelle Tabit of the UIW History Department present on the writings of British author J. K. Rowling. Chinese Paper-Cutting Workshop
Paper-cutting is a very distinctive visual art of Chinese handicrafts. It originated from the 6th century when women used to paste golden and silver foil cuttings onto their hair at the temples, and men used them in sacred rituals. Later, they were used during festivals to decorate gates and windows. After hundreds of years' development, now they have become a very popular means of decoration among country folk, especially women. Join the Institute of World Cultures for a workshop on Chinese paper-cutting from 3 - 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 9 in the foyer of the Mabee Library. Muslim Women's Dress
This Women's History Month event is from 12 - 1:15 p.m., Thursday, March 10 in the Joyce Building, Room 126. Sakinah J. Al Duhailib, Fatma Aslan, Nazneen Husain, Sarwat Husain, Khaled H. Mulla, Narjis Pierre and Sumeyra Tek discuss the many styles of head covering and dress women choose to express their religious, cultural and personal identities. This is part of a class led by Michaele Haynes, a Cultural Anthropologist and Sr. Martha Ann Kirk who has had experience in Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq and Palestine will moderate the discussion. 2016 Sr. Margaret Patrice Slattery Lecture in English
The 2016 Sr. Margaret Patrice Slattery Lecture in English is at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 10 in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Dr. Tanja Stampfl will deliver the lecture entitled "Encountering the Other, Re-Seeing the Self: The Trope of the Encounter in Cross-Cultural Literature." Sr. Corita Kent's Pop Art and the Ideas of the Second Vatican
A museum docent and Sr. Martha Ann Kirk will consider how social justice and the spirit of the Second Vatican Council influenced the pop art and teaching of Catholic Sister Corita Kent in Los Angeles in the 1960-70s on a tour of the San Antonio Art Museum (200 W. Jones Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78215) from 4:45 - 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, March 22. Tour will be free if one has a UIW ID card and is with the class group. Band of Sisters Film Screening
Band of Sisters is a documentary featuring the stories of Catholic nuns and their work for social justice after Vatican II. Sr. Yolanda Tarango, CCVI, is featured in the film and will be available to respond to questions following the screening. Swing-In Auction Party and Golf Tournament
The Swing-In Auction Party is at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 28 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room and the Golf Tournament tee times are 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., Friday, April 29 at the Republic Golf Course. Swing-In is an annual event hosted by the UIW Development Board that raises funds for much needed scholarships. The theme for this year's auction party is Wild West; make sure to wear your hats and boots. Last year, our donors' generosity enabled us to raise a record-breaking total of nearly $400,000. The Cutting Edge™ Fiesta® Fashion Show

2016 UIW Tech Fair
The 2016 UIW Tech Fair will take place on Wednesday, April 13 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. The Tech Fair team is planning a video-poster presentation space, which will include four large, flat-screen monitors, from which you can exhibit your research, show a video or share a poster-style presentation to an audience of up to ten attendees. The video-poster presentation space will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sessions are scheduled hourly. Presentations should be no longer than 10 minutes, (less than 15 slides), including time for questions and answers. Once your presentation is complete, you can encourage your audience to attend the next presentation. Space is limited. To register, click this link. Would you consider taking a booth at the UIW Tech Fair? The booth will need to be staffed from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. If you are unable to dedicate that much time to staffing a booth, perhaps you could share the booth space with colleagues or students. Booths will include power, wireless internet, pipe and drape and a table and chairs. The space is approximately 6' x 6', with ample room to post signage. This year's theme is centered on the upcoming Fiesta® celebration, so we encourage you to decorate your booth in a Fiesta theme. Click here to reserve a booth space. "Survival Mindset" Information Session
The UIW Police Department and Environmental Health Safety & Risk Management will be hosting "Survival Mindset" information session. These information sessions are an overview of the original 4-hour class.

About the Training:

The current presentation teaches and promotes the "Run, Hide, Fight" concept. In today's world, each and every one of us must be responsible for our own personal safety and security. The concepts and ideas presented are not campus specific; they apply in any environment the participant may find themselves.

Each session is scheduled for 2 hours. The presentation is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, leaving 30 minutes for questions and answers. The sessions during the Spring 2016 semester will be held in the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Seating is limited to 30 participants per session. Email colunga@uiwtx.edu if you wish to attend one of the 16 sessions listed below. Please include the date of the session you wish to attend.

Quick and Easy Classroom Assessment Techniques
The research is clear—frequent feedback has a powerful effect on learning—yet there are still only 24 hours in the day. Classroom assessment techniques provide students with timely feedback without requiring that instructors invest a lot of time in grading. Participants will learn five techniques that are easily incorporated into many types of classes. Ranging from the simplest to the most complex, the assessment techniques are muddiest point, one-minute paper, think-pair-share, memory matrix, and jigsaw. The first 10 participants to register for each session will receive a copy of Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers by Angelo and Cross. There are two sessions on Monday, March 7: 8 - 9 a.m. in the Administration Building, Room 212 with breakfast and 12 - 1 p.m. in the Nursing Building, Room 206 with lunch provided. New Blackboard Course Shell - Coming Summer 2016
The UIW Instructional Technology team is developing a brand new Blackboard course shell for the main campus courses. The shell will include pre-formatted content for hybrid, online, and face-to-face courses. Continuing through the end of April, Instructional Technology will be previewing the new course shell to faculty and staff providing an opportunity for both faculty input and training on how to integrate the shell with your Blackboard courses. Employee Health & Wellness

National Athletic Training Month
March is National Athletic Training Month. UIW has Board Certified Athletic Trainers in both the athletic and academic settings. These professionals are experts in injury prevention, first responder services, recognition/diagnostics, post-injury care and rehabilitation services. The Cardinals Athletic Training staff provides daily care and Athletic Training services to over 500 UIW athletes who compete and represent the university in a variety of sports. Please help us recognize these professionals and celebrate National Athletic Training Month during March.

Employee Wellness Lunch & Learn
The Employee Wellness Committee will host a Lunch & Learn at 12 p.m., Thursday, March 24 in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. The speaker will present on the American Red Cross. RSVP by email: empwellness@uiwtx.edu.

14th Annual Chip'n Classic
SACHS is hosting the 14th Annual Chip'n Classic from 1 - 8 p.m., Saturday, March 12 at The Republic Golf Course. The shotgun start is at 1 p.m. with a putting contest before the tournament begins.
