Meet UIW Convergent Media Specialist Gino Segovia. Gino was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. After high school, Gino moved and lived in Washington until moving back to Corpus Christi to pursue a degree in communications with an emphasis in media. In 2004, Gino moved to San Antonio to pursue an additional bachelor's degree at UIW. While pursuing this degree, Gino became a work study in the Instructional Technology department and was soon hired full time to fill the AV Tech role in 2005. In 2009, Gino became UIW's Convergent Media Specialist.

His first real love is music. Currently, Gino is writing music and perfecting his guitar skills in the hopes of performing live in the future.

He said that a rewarding part of working at UIW is that it is a home for both employees and students. A highlight of his job is working with the student work studies. Gino loves teaching and learning from his students as well as watching them grow into their career.

Growing up, Gino was raised by his mother, grandmother and aunts who taught him the value of hard work and dedication. It was the impression of these strong women that propelled him to never give up or settle for mediocrity. Gino works to make a difference in his community though his work and his music.

A Special Message from the Vice President for Mission and Ministry: Sr. Walter Maher, CCVI
Southside ISD is collecting stuffed backpacks to give their students when school begins in a couple of months. Their district lacks enormous resources. Out of all the school districts in San Antonio, Southside ISD is the only school district that does not have a major grocery store like H-E-B. They are asking for our help. They are asking for backpacks stuffed with pairs of jeans, tennis shoes, toiletries and healthy snacks. All donations can be dropped off in the Office of Mission and Ministry. UIW Welcome Mass
The UIW Welcome Mass is a beautiful Mass welcoming all of our newest Cardinals to the UIW community. Two Masses will be made available on Sunday, Aug. 21. The first Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word. The second Mass will be in the Administration Building in Our Lady's Chapel at 10:45 a.m. to accommodate the overflow of persons. Mass of the Holy Spirit
Join the UIW community for the Mass of the Holy Spirit at 12 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Our Lady's Chapel. In keeping with a long tradition dating from the founding of the great European universities in the Middle Ages, UIW celebrates the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the start of each academic year. During the liturgy we ask for the inspiration, guidance, and presence of God's Spirit on all of our campus activities. Mozart Festival Texas
The Mozart Festival Texas is San Antonio's premier summer classical music event. Walking Meditation for Peace
Join the UIW community for Walking Meditation for Peace at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 5, at the Denman Estate (7735 Mockingbird Lane, 78229). This walk for peace is on the eve of the anniversary of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Quietly, compassionately circle and know that we are part of one human family circling the earth. Our hearts long for inner and for outer peace. First-Time Freshman Orientation
Help us welcome new Cardinals to the nest. UIW's one-day orientation program is designed to prepare admitted students to be successful at UIW. Students and families will have the opportunity to participate in sessions which will familiarize them with the UIW campus and prepare them for classes. The program includes a welcome from Dr. Lou Agnese, sessions from academic deans, advising, Cardinal organization fair and other informative events. Photo Database Update – All Employees Welcome
In an effort to keep the employee photo database up-to-date, new administrators, faculty members and staff who would like a new photo for the Office of Communications and Marketing database are asked to stop by the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room on Thursday, Aug. 18 during the Full-time Faculty Opening Workshop and Luncheon. A professional photographer will be on hand to take your headshot. These photos will be available to you if you need to submit a headshot for a publication, and they will be used by each department for their own purposes. Lynda Cavazos Dissertation Defense
Lynda Cavazos will host a public defense of her PhD dissertation at 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 5, in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. The chair of Lynda's dissertation committee is Dr. Mary Ruth Moore. The title of her dissertation is "A Basic Interpretative Study of Educators in the Childcare Profession: Collegiality as a Base of Job Satisfaction." The event is free and open to the public. New Graduate Student and Family Orientation
Join the UIW community for the New Graduate Student and Family Orientation from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Concert Hall. The orientation provides both the student and family a sense of belonging to the UIW community. The orientation has three tracks: the student track, the family track, and the Little Cardinal's track. The student track will cover information on support services and important academic policies. The family track is designed to illustrate the positive ways that family/friends can support their graduate student throughout the Master's program. The Little Cardinal's track features arts and crafts that tie into the overall theme of orientation. The orientation is closed with a special Kairos Card ceremony. Single Game Tickets On Sale for UIW Football
The beginning of the 2016 UIW football season is less than a month away and fans can start purchasing single game tickets starting at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 5. The Cardinals will play six home games at Benson Stadium this fall, opening the Sept. 3 home contest against former Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Kingsville. The next two home game come against a pair of 2015 FCS playoff teams, McNeese on September 24 and Sam Houston State on Oct. 8.  The Cardinals will also play Southland Conference foes Stephen F. Austin (Oct. 29), Southeastern La. (Nov. 5) and Houston Baptist (Nov. 19).

UIW Football to Host Helmets and Heels Clinic
UIW head football coach Larry Kennan and his staff will host its inaugural Helmets and Heels football clinic for women from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 25, at the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. The Helmets and Heels Clinic gives women a chance to learn the fundamentals, strategies, tactics and language of football from the Cardinals coaching staff. The event will be conducted in a social atmosphere, that will include an all-star panel discussing sessions on offense and defense, a fashion show, and a Q & A segment. The social engagement for the evening will include:

In the Face of Violence – Call for Proposals
Lead our students and encourage their leadership by organizing gatherings in September and in October.  We are currently seeking proposals for Campaign Nonviolence Week at UIW, which is a part of our international efforts starting Sept. 18 and the annual UIW October Season of Peace and Justice with its call for presentations. Blackboard Course Shell Training
In case you haven't noticed, UIW has adopted a new shell for the Blackboard course template. This shell will be used campus-wide. But there is no need to fear, The UIW Instructional Technology team is here to demonstrate the shell and show you how it will benefit both you and your students. Come and spend an hour with the IT team in the Administration Building, Room 212, and learn how the shell is designed to enhance student engagement and help faculty manage course content. Blackboard Organizations 101
This workshop is designed for organizational leaders who need to leverage Blackboard tools and content to deliver information and generate feedback from organization users. The course will be offered Aug. 8, 9 and 11 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Mabee Library, Room 230. Upon completing the workshop, organizational leaders will be able to manage the organization's course menu and communicate with members using announcements and email. The Instructional Technology team will also explain how to create, deliver and manage course content. We will finish out the workshop with an overview of the Zoom web conferencing interface.
