UIW Recalls Its Heritage and Mission
Training nurses for Santa Rosa Hospital and teachers for their schools eventually led the Incarnate Word Sisters to establish a Catholic high school and college open to young women from South Texas and Mexico.

Taizé Prayer Service
The community is invited to participate in a service of contemplative worship in the tradition of Taizé beginning at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, in St. Joseph's Chapel at The Village at Incarnate Word. 4th Annual Interfaith Conference
The UIW Interfaith Council and Student Interfaith Association will host the 4th Annual Regional Interfaith Conference from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21, at the Oblate School of Theology, Tymen Hall, (285 Oblate Drive, 78216). Bomba Latina Festival
The Institute of World Cultures and Campus Engagement is hosting the Bomba Latina Festival from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, this event introduces the community to Latin dance and music. Cardinal Cocktail Showdown
Become a judge for the first official signature cocktail for UIW. The Cardinal Cocktail Showdown will begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Wyndham Garden River Walk (103 9th Street, 78215). There is a $5 fee for this event. Taste different cocktails at various stations and submit your vote for your favorite. 45th Annual Southwest Conference on Asian Studies
The CHASS, Department of History and Asian Studies Program are hosting the 45th Southwest Conference on Asian Studies in the Bonilla Science Hall and ICC Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15. Mindfulness Groups
The Office of Counseling Services is offering a free mindfulness group from 12 - 12:45 p.m., each Friday through Oct. 28, in the Administration Building, Room 422. Attendees will learn about the benefits of mindfulness, and each week a new technique will be practiced. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate and experience what it is like to be aware of the present moment. Alpha Lounge Tuesdays

The Office of Research Development Announces New Ethics Review Manager System
The Office of Research Development is proud to announce implementation of the new Ethics Review Manager web based management system for applications to the UIW Institutional Review Board (IRB). Roy Rodriguez Dissertation Defense
Roy Rodriguez will hold a public defense of his dissertation at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 10, in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. The title of Roy's dissertation is "Civic Engagement and Service Learning for Medical Students: A Phenomenological Study of Transformation." Steven Sill Dissertation Defense

Fall DASH Training Sessions
The Office of Institutional Research has several DASH training opportunities this Fall 2016 semester in the Mabee Library, Room 230. These sessions are open to individuals who are interested in accessing DASH but haven't had DASH training. Flu Shots Available at Health Services Clinic
Flu shots are available to students, faculty and staff in the Health Services Clinic from Monday, Oct. 10, through Monday, Nov. 14, during the height of flu season. Register to Vote - Your Vote Matters
As our nation enters one of the biggest and busiest political seasons in years, don't forget to register to vote. Texas law designates all public libraries in the state as official voter registration sites. All public libraries have voter registration applications on-hand in a specially designated table-top station easily visible and accessible to the public.

ECCL Assists in Voting Registration
The ECCL will have voting registration tables every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the AT&T Circle until Oct. 11. A mock vote will take place at the closing of Hispanic Heritage Month in Cardinals Courtyard. They will be offering transportation to and from a Bexar County Early Voting Location. Transportation will be offered every hour on the hour from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, Tuesday, Nov. 1, and Wednesday, Nov. 2. Faculty, staff and students can sign up at this link. Third Friday Birding
The Headwaters at Incarnate Word is hosting a leisurely walk through the Headwaters Sanctuary with a birding specialist from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 21. Anyone fascinated by the sounds of birds is welcome. This is a great opportunity for beginning or intermediate birders to develop and improve their identification skills. Please wear close-toed shoes, long pants and bring water. Binoculars will be available. Each walk is limited to 12 people. To register and for info, contact pamela.ball@amormeus.org.

A Guided Celtic Walk to Thin Places in The Headwaters
Join the Headwaters at Incarnate Word for a guided Celtic walk through the Headwaters Sanctuary from 9 - 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29. The Celtic tradition has always honored "thin places" as places where heaven and earth were closely connected. This walk will offer quiet meditations that will reflect the Celtic vision that enables us to see "thin places" of healing and mystery right before our eyes. Religious Studies Professor Sylvia Maddox will lead the retreat. She is the co-author of "Praying with The Celtic Saints." This program is limited to 14.
