40 Days of Lent Canned Food Drive
During the 40 Days of Lent the UIW community has been asked to collect one canned good each day, starting Ash Wednesday and ending on Easter Sunday, in solidarity with those who may not know where their next meal may come from -- knowing that this gift is a gift to Word made flesh. Please drop off your donation in AD 147.
Suggested non-perishable food items include: canned tuna/chicken, canned soups, canned vegetables/ fruit, peanut butter and jelly, rice, beans, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, vegetable oil, sugar, salt and other spices.

The WORD IN ACTION: Incarnate Word Sisters and San Antonio Historical Tour
Walk in the footsteps of the Incarnate Word Sisters in this free historical tour on Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m., to 3 p.m. The tour, which will begin and end at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word, takes participants through San Francisco de la Espada Mission, where the Sisters taught, and the San Fernando Cathedral nearby where the first orphanage opened. Dr. Gilberto Hinojosa and Sr. Martha Ann Kirk will provide historical insights and modern-day perspectives.

UIW Community Garden Workday
The community is invited to join us for the UIW Community Garden Workday on Saturday, March 24 from 9 – 11 a.m. Come be a part of UIW’s ongoing sustainability initiatives and the WORD IN ACTION celebrating President Evans’ upcoming inauguration. Volunteers will have the opportunity to help beautify and prolong the life of the campus' Community Garden by helping stain current wood décor, prepare expanded garden beds for polluter plants and harvest current vegetation of food-based plants. There will be many fun and rejuvenating activities at this family friendly event. People of all ages are welcome to come out and be a part of the UIW family. 8th Annual Easter Egg Hunt
The Office of Alumni & Parent Relations is pleased to host the 8th Annual Easter Egg Hunt at the McCracken House on Saturday, March 24 from 9 - 11:30 a.m. with the Easter Egg Hunt beginning promptly at 11 a.m. There will be 1,000 Easter eggs, activity tables and a special appearance by the Easter bunny! National Weather Service: Skywarn Weather Spotter Training
The Austin/San Antonio Weather Forecast Office offers SKYWARN® severe weather training to allow citizens, first responders, emergency management, amateur radio operators, and volunteer organizations the opportunity to learn about severe weather preparedness and safety. Besides learning about severe weather topics specific to South Central Texas, procedures for reporting severe weather to the local Austin/San Antonio National Weather Service Office are also covered. This training session, being held Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Bonilla Science Hall Rm. 129, is free and open to the general public.
After training is complete, usually 1.5 hours for the BASIC training, you will be an official weather spotter for the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service will count on you to be eyes out in the field when trying to verify severe weather across South Central Texas.
2018 Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion Show
Save the Date for the 2018 “Cutting Edge” Fashion Show set for 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 18 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. This official Fiesta event displays the latest fashion created and presented by UIW Fashion design students. The collections include garments students have illustrated, designed and constructed in a year-long fashion capstone course. Each collection is centered on an individual theme ranging from a season, a color or market segment. From sound and lighting to staging and contracting professional models, UIW students experience every aspect of planning a professional runway show. The 2018 Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion Show Medals are now available for $5 in the fashion office located on the second floor of the Joyce Building.

Community News
Women’s History Month: Did You Know?
The University of the Incarnate Word was the first local (city of San Antonio) college for women. In 1893, the sisters established Incarnate Word School on Government Hill in San Antonio. When they purchased the George Brackenridge estate and constructed a motherhouse on the property, the elementary and secondary school was transferred to the new location. Because San Antonio had no college for women at the time and many parents were not eager to send their daughters away to study, college courses were added to the curriculum.

UIW Career Services will be having a clothes collection March 19 - May 18. The Cardinal Closet will provide professional career clothing for students’ use in interviews, career fairs, internships, networking receptions, and other career-related events, which require professional attire. Donate Used Glasses for Los Quijotes of San Antonio Health Ambassadors
Please consider donating used glasses that will be used for the 2018 Health Mission trip to the southern part of Mexico, focusing on serving the indigenous population of the state of Oaxaca. Our goal is to collect 100 glasses single vision or readers (no bifocals or progressives). Donations will be accepted through March 23.

American Advertising Awards
The Graphic Design Program at the University of the Incarnate would like to congratulate the students that had work selected as finalists for the 2018 American Advertising Awards hosted by the American Advertising Federation – San Antonio (AAF-SA) chapter.
At a banquet held on March 3, 2018, at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel, the level of winners in each category were announced. Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards were given, with those winning Student Gold & Silver Awards being advanced to District Competition. Student Judges Awards and Best of Show were also announced.
UIW students took home 15 of the 17 student awards given out that evening: 5 Gold, 3 Silver, 4 Bronze, and 2 Special Judges Awards as well as Best of Show. UIW Graphic Design students competed against other design students from San Antonio College, UTSA, the Art Institute of San Antonio, and Texas State University.
Two UIW students were awarded scholarships of $1500 and $500. The Best of Show winner claimed a $500 prize.

Diversi-Tea
Diversi-Tea featuring Bahrain took place on Wednesday, March 21 in the Student Center Concourse. The Campus Engagement office in collaboration with the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability and International Affairs has continued the hosting of a renewed tradition of “Diversi-Tea/Collation” at UIW. The daily tradition of “Collation” of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word dates as far back as 1876 even before the establishment of the Incarnate Word College in 1886.
The Inauguration of Dr. Thomas Evans, Tenth President of the University of the Incarnate Word
The University celebrated the Inauguration of Dr. Thomas M. Evans as UIW’s 10th President. Events began with a community picnic on Tuesday, March 20 and will conclude with a community Day of Service on Saturday, March 24. UIW’s students, faculty and staff all took part in a week-long celebration to welcome our new president!
Community Picnic
The kickoff event for a week of celebrations, was the UIW Community Picnic! Students, faculty and staff gathered for gourmet hotdogs, live music, games, giveaways, shaved ice, and fellowship.
Dr. Tom Evans and Lisa Evans celebrated the inauguration with Red and delicious gourmet hotdogs at the Community Picnic on Tuesday, March 20, 2018.
Faculty and staff joined in on the fun too!
Live music at the Community Picnic had proud Cardinals dancing with joy in anticipation of Dr. Evans’ inauguration.
Academic Colloquium
On Wednesday, March 21, faculty from different departments throughout the University came together for “One Word: A Celebration of What Makes Us Whole,” an academic colloquium that formed part of the inaugural festivities. Moderated by Dr. Paul Lewis, chair of the Department of Philosophy, the dialogue sought insights and reflections from the faculty about their experiences, hopes, challenges and undertakings as educators. Via an interactive question and answer session, participant shared their stories and shed light on those “intangible somethings” that unite UIW.

Inauguration Ceremony
On Thursday, March 22, Dr. Thomas Evans was officially inaugurated as the University of the Incarnate Word’s Tenth President. His inauguration ceremony was attend by students, faculty, staff, alumni, and esteemed guests.
Dr. Evans participates in a time-honored Cardinal tradition, walking under the iconic clock tower for the procession to the Inauguration Ceremony.

Dr. Thomas Evans delivers his Inaugural Address, during which he announced the largest endowed scholarship commitment to-date in the history of the University of the Incarnate Word. Through the generosity of Mr. Carlos Alvarez, the University of the Incarnate Word will receive $1 million dollars toward an endowment to provide high performing and under resourced UIW students with financial support and mentoring.
UIW Cardinal Singers, under the direction of Professor William Gokelman, perform at the Inauguration Ceremony.
The UIW Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Brett Richardson, play for the Inauguration Recession.
Inauguration Reception
All who attended the Inauguration Ceremony were invited to attend a reception in the SEC ballroom. Attendees enjoyed delicious food and friendship, and also had the opportunity to share congratulatory messages with Dr. Evans.

NHMA College Health Scholars Program Conference
UIW’s Ettling Center for Civic Leadership & Sustainability, in collaboration with the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) will host the Greater San Antonio Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) at a conference on Saturday, April 7. Through this conference, the College Health Scholars Program will work to increase the number of students matriculating to health professional schools and graduate programs.
NHMA is seeking to enroll freshman and sophomore undergraduate students from the Greater San Antonio area interested in health careers. These students will have an opportunity to receive academic support, application process information, and financial aid information needed to achieve success in health professions careers. Your assistance recruiting undergraduate freshmen and sophomore students to participate in this outstanding program is greatly appreciated.

Gamification: What Do Legend of Zelda and Grand Theft Auto Have to Do with Learning?
Whether they involve building a tower with virtual blocks, defending the kingdom of Hyrule, or plotting auto theft in Los Santos, games engross our students—and often us, too. Many of the principles that make games so engaging can be applied to course design. Participants in this session will visit the educational gaming platform Breakout EDU and discuss ways to apply principles of gamification to their own courses. Don’t Just Look at That Paper—Edit It
Failing to edit well prevents writers from presenting their best selves. But when asked about their editing, students often say they “looked over” the paper, a singularly ineffective approach to the task. Participants will learn five more effective approaches to editing; they can be provided to students in a handout or occasionally practiced in class. The first ten faculty members to register and attend each session will receive $100 stipends.
