The 38th annual Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion Show took place Wednesday, April 18, featuring designs created by UIW fashion students. Theresa Lopez, senior instructor and program director of UIW's Fashion Management program, presented awards to the winning students alongside KSAT 12's Ursula Pari, following the event. 

 

MISSION

Mission and Ministry: Summer Mass Schedule
We will celebrate our last 8 p.m. Mass for the Spring semester on Sunday, May 6.

Masses will continue throughout the summer on Sunday's at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady's Chapel through August 19, 2018. 

We will celebrate our annual Welcome Mass on Sunday, August 26. Due to limited seating in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word, two liturgies will be offered on this day:
- 10:30 AM (Chapel of the Incarnate Word)
- 10:45 AM (Our Lady's Chapel) 

Our 8:00 p.m. Mass resumes in Our Lady's Chapel on Sunday, September 2, 2018.

Interfaith Literacy, Fluency, and Service
Considering the UIW Policy that students may request absences for their main religious holidays, all are invited to continue learning from the Interfaith webpages coming from the Interfaith Youth Core Innovation Grant this year and to learn from the upcoming events.  A closing discussion with participants will be held Tuesday, April 24 from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. National Day of Prayer - Annual Breakfast
The 2018 National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 3.  The power of prayer is mighty and more important than ever in today's world. Please join us in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room from 6:45 – 8:30 a.m. for the Annual Prayer Breakfast, a special time of community and grace. Dr. Thomas Evans, UIW president, Danny Anderson, Trinity University president, George Hernandez, president & CEO of University Health Systems, Mary Beth Fisk, executive director of San Antonio Ecumenical Center and Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham will answer two questions – why do I pray and how do I pray?

Cardinal Happy Hour – Alamo Heights Night

In appreciation for your work and dedication, full-time employees are invited to attend a Cardinal Happy Hour prior to Alamo Heights Night (AHN) 2018.  Offices may close at 3:30 p.m. for employees to attend this event with exception of essential personnel as determined by the appropriate Vice President. In situations where events, appointments, or classes have been scheduled, the dean or director for that department or off-site location will determine an appropriate course of action. Any employee who does not wish to attend the event should continue with their normal working hours and keep their office open. UIW full-time employees who do not attend the Happy Hour may still attend AHN free of charge after the general admission opening with a valid UIW ID.

The Cardinal Happy Hour is scheduled for Friday, April 20, from 3:30 - 5:30 pm prior to the general admission opening at 5:30 pm. The entrance for the Cardinal Happy Hour will be at Booth #2. All UIW, IWHS and SACHS full-time employees must present a valid UIW ID to receive admission, two drink tickets (good for beer or soft drinks), and one food ticket. The free tickets will be accepted until 5:30 pm at the 10 food booths located in the Cardinal Happy Hour section.

Community News 

Leadership Lecture - April 6th
UIW's Ettling Center for Civic Leadership & Sustainability and Residence Life hosted Dr. Elena Rios, President and CEO of the National Hispanic Medical Association, for a special presentation on leadership. Dr. Rios presented on health care policy and her experiences being a health care worker and administrator for the past forty years.

National Hispanic Medical Association College Health Scholars Program Conference - April 7th 
UIW's Ettling Center for Civic Leadership & Sustainability, in collaboration with the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) hosted the Greater San Antonio Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) at a conference on Saturday, April 7. Over 125 participants attended the one-day conference. Students had the opportunity to learn about the admissions process for UIW and local health/science professional schools. Through this conference, the College Health Scholars Program will work to increase the number of students matriculating to health professional schools and graduate programs.

Celebration of Community Luncheon - April 11th
UIW's Ettling Center for Civic Leadership & Sustainability hosted its second annual Celebration of Community Luncheon on Wednesday, April 11 in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Special recognition was given to community-based organizations for their continuous support and collaboration that sustain our diverse and growing community. The Cardinal Community Leaders Program also presented on their volunteer experiences with Southwest Independent School District.

Mathematics Dept. Conference
On Friday, April 14, the UIW Mathematics Dept. hosted the Conference of Texas Statisticians (COTS) at the Student Engagement Center. The COTS meetings afford Texas statisticians the opportunity for social and intellectual exchange on a yearly basis. Senior and junior statisticians as well as students presented their research talks or posters at the conference.

Faculty Appreciation Luncheon 
On Monday, April 16, a luncheon was held in celebration of UIW Faculty and Emeritus Faculty achievements and contributions. The luncheon also honored the recipients of the 2018 Provost Legacy Teaching Awards, Presidential Teaching Award, Ed Zlotkowski Faculty Service-Learning Award and the 2018-2019 Moody Professor.

Peacebuilding Symposium 
From April 17-19, four visiting Fulbright Scholars visited San Antonio to participate in a program of campus and community visits at the University of the Incarnate Word, Trinity University, St. Mary's University, and Our Lady of the Lake University. The purpose of this symposium was to have conversations about how we can all contribute to peacebuilding and gain insights into the challenges confronting today's global community and finding collective solutions that promote and facilitate peace. The scholars delivered a series of lectures on each university campus and participated in a panel discussion at UIW on the evening of Thursday, April 19, moderated by Congressman Charlie Gonzalez.

Dr. Sona Manusyan, pictured above with Dr. Ana Wandless-Hagendorf, Dr. Osman Ozturgut, and Dr. Trinidad Macias, is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Personality Psychology at Yerevan State University in Armenia. Her peacebuilding lecture was entitled, What & Who Makes Societies Ready for Peace: How Can Psychology Join the Conversation Today?

Dr. Emre Hatipoglu is Associate Professor at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Sabancı University, Istanbul. His lecture was entitled, Peacebuilding: Conflict vs. Post-Conflict Policies: The Case of Bosnia.

Dr. Kacper Gradon, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Warsaw and the Director of the Center for Forensic & Investigative Science (University of Warsaw), addressed the audience with his lecture, Preparing for Uncertain Times: Future Trends in Crime and the Future of Terrorism.

Corporate Cup Registration
Join team UIW in Corporate Cup 2018! UIW is a sponsor and host site of the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup. Over 80 companies and thousands of employees come to UIW each summer and compete in a 13-event challenge modeled after a corporate Olympics competition. 

San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup will be held on Saturday, June 2 rom 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. Employees can represent Team UIW as a competitor, a volunteer, or a spectator. Families are always welcome to attend but cannot compete (except in the healthy walk). To learn more, visit uiw.edu/teamuiw. Be sure to register before April 13 to make sure you get a t-shirt!

Instructional Technology: Blackboard User's Group
This session will get your course ready for the end of the semester. ITS staff will be on hand to review your Grade Center. Earth Day Observance
The Earth Day Committee welcomes the community to gather for the observance of International Earth Day on Monday, April 23, in the circle near the West Gate for an Earth Day Fair from 11 a.m., - 1 p.m. At noon, there will be presentation of the William Mulcahy Stewardship Awards and talks on campus sustainability.  Representatives of various organizations will have displays in the circle and students will present EcoExchange posters and recycled art in the SEC.  Exhibitors include eyeglass donations to the Lion's Club; the Ettling Center seeking applications for sustainability scholars and environmental ambassadors, Urban Earth adobe brick and the  Headwaters at Incarnate Word. Visitation House Medal The Visitation House Ministries 2018 Fiesta Medal is here. Supplies are limited. Medals can be purchased at the Women's Global Connection Offices located in the Brackenridge Villa, Lower Level, or at Visitation House, 945 W. Huisache, for a suggested donation of $10.  The design presents the ministry logo of the Visitation, featuring Mary and Elizabeth.
