Azerbaijan Ambassador to meet with UIW Community

Provost Dr. Kathi Light invites the UIW Community to a presentation by Azerbaijan's Ambassador to the U.S., the Hon. Elin Suleymanov with an introduction and brief remarks by U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar on Friday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. in UIW's Mabee Library Auditorium. Azerbaijan has become a leading ally and strategic partner to the United States over the years and is one of the fastest growing economies in its region. They were one of the countries to provide aid to the U.S. directly following the devastating events of 9/11, assisting the U.S. on matters of international security. All are welcome to attend.The presentation will be followed by a meet-and-greet with the Congressman and Ambassador. No R.S.V.P. required.

UIW Theatre Dept. presents Gruesome Playground Injuries

The UIW Theatre Dept. presents "Gruesome Playground Injuries." The play chronicles Kayleen and Doug's thirty-year relationship from elementary school through adulthood. It's a relationship marked by personal injuries, sometimes horrific, as the action jumps back and forth in five-year increments. The production runs until Saturday, Oct. 11 with various show times in Cheever Theatre. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $8 for non-UIW students, $6 for groups of 10 or more and FREE for UIW students, staff and faculty with use of campus ID. Sea the World: 11th Annual Water Show and Silent Auction

UIW synchronized swimming team is hosting their annual water show and silent auction. Everyone is invited to enjoy and support a top nationally ranked team. There will be two separate performances on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. and7 p.m. in the Ann Barshop Natatorium. Before the show and during intermission there will be a silent auction with great items available for bidding. Items range from free pizzas to beautifully themed gift baskets. The event is open to the public with admission prices at $4 for students and children and $8 for adults. Hispanic Heritage Month Closing Event: La Celebración

Hispanic Heritage Month Committee Members and the Office of University Events and Student Programs will host HHM's closing event, La Celebración, on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in Marian Hall. Attendees will have an opportunity to sample a wide-range of cuisine from different Hispanic cultures, enjoy music and traditional Hispanic dances including a folk Spanish guitar performance. The inaugural closing day celebration will highlight the diverse Hispanic cultures represented at the university while showcasing the Hispanic culture to the local community. Giving Students Effective Feedback on Writing Assignments
Feedback on students' writing is crucial to improvement; the Center for Teaching and Learning will host a workshop on Friday, Oct. 10, noon- 1 p.m. in Admin Bldg. Room 212 describing ways instructors can better provide feedback to their students, how to better deliver their feedback and more. HR presents Cardinal Talent!

HR is excited to announce the new online application system, Cardinal Talent! Cardinal Talent goes live on Wednesday, Oct. 22. In order to transition to Cardinal Talent, the old PeopleAdmin system will shut down; therefore, Tuesday, Oct. 14 is the last day to post a position on the old PeopleAdmin system; all positions will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Access to PeopleAdmin will still be available to view applicants that have applied to current vacant positions. Below are training dates and working sessions for the new system.

Ingram Park Mall Health Fair

Students from the Feik School of Pharmacy will be conducting free screenings inside Ingram Park Mall on Saturday, Oct. 11, noon-6 p.m. The health fair will offer free blood pressure screenings, diabetic foot exams, blood glucose screenings and vaccination counseling as well as additional services. Allison Baez will hold a public defense of her dissertation on Monday, Oct. 13, 9:30 a.m. in Mabee Library Special Collections Room. The title of her dissertation is "The Roles of Navajo Women in the Fort Defiance Agency of Navajoland (Diné Bikéyah - Tséhootsooí) Concerning Their Life Experiences and the Effects of These Experiences on Their Cultural Roles Within the Navajo Community: An Ethnographic Study." Her dissertation committee chair is Dr. Sally Said.

Lalon Alexander

Mary Lalon Alexander will hold a public defense of her doctoral dissertation in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room on Tuesday, Oct. 14,1:30-3:30 p.m. The title of her dissertation is "Oral History of Professional Theatrical Beaders in New York City." iPad iFilm Festival

Instructional Technology's Adela Gott will and Terry Peak invite the community to the inaugural two-day iPad Film Festival on Thursday, Oct. 16 and Friday, Oct. 17, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each day in Gorman Building Room 212 where attendees will learn the skills needed to create a short video using an iPad. This video can be an introduction to your course, or an instructional video that will help your students understand a difficult concept. Subject matter experts will be available to guide attendees through the entire production process, from storyboard to a completed video. To help complete videos, entrants will receive:

• An iPad tripod mount, a tripod, video lens and microphone
• All software (iMovie, Movie Pro, and Explain Everything)
• Complimentary lunch

Peace in the Middle East Forum

UIW Play Day for Peace 2014: "B" is for Bats, Bubbles and Boxes—we're going batty at the zoo!

Dreeben School of Education students will host its annual Play Day for Peace with children from the UIW Brainpower Connection schools on Saturday, Oct. 11, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the San Antonio Zoo's Nature Spot. The United Nations Rights of the child calls for all children to have the right to play; playing is seen as the opposite of violence as well as providing essential benefits for children. My Walk of Change and Hope: Transforming Women's Burdens into Opportunities

The Headwaters Coalition at UIW will host a talk by Kenyan native Rose Wamalwa who will share her experiences as an African-born female growing up in rural settings and the challenges she encountered that prompted her desire to empower grassroots women today. Her discussion will be on Monday, Oct. 13, 3-4 p.m. in the Village at Incarnate Word Assembly Room. Wamalwa is the founder and program director for the Women in Water and Natural Resources Conservation (We-Can)" nonprofit organization as well as community solutions fellow.
