A Special Message from Lisa Bazley, VP, Information Resources & CIO

Dear Cardinal Community,

Earlier this month, many cities and organizations across the state of Texas were hit by a large, coordinated ransomware attack. This type of attack is incredibly damaging and can cost an organization millions of dollars.

UIW was not impacted by this last round of attacks, but we, as a community, need to be prepared in case an attacker sets his or her sights on us.

Your UIW IRD team goes to great lengths to prevent ransomware emails and websites from reaching our users. However, a carefully crafted attack may be able to get by our detection systems. In this event, our users are our last line of defense from these attacks.

To avoid becoming a victim of ransomware, simply follow these few guidelines:

  • Use the Office365 OneDrive service to store all of your files (documents, pictures, etc.). Do not store files only on your computer.
    • This service keeps backup copies of your files and syncs automatically with your devices.
    • It has a mechanism to recover files that have been encrypted by ransomware.
    • The help desk can assist you with setting this up on your computer.
  • Be extremely vigilant about links and attachments in emails.
    • Do not click anything from a source you don’t trust.
    • Even if you do trust the source, make sure the email is expected. The sender may have had their account compromised.
    • When in doubt, verify by contacting the sender.
    • If a link or attachment in an email won’t open, contact the help desk as it may be our security mechanisms preventing it.
  • Do not click links in personal (non-UIW) email accounts on University computers.
  • If you receive an email you are unsure of, contact the help desk immediately.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep UIW safe!
