FLIGHT FAQ's
FLIGHT is an acronym that stands for Financial Literacy, Integrated guidance, and Health career Tracts. It is a program that entails three components that help students reach their goal of earning a college degree.
A FLIGHT Mentor is an administrator or faculty who has completed training to know how to assist UIW students throughout their academic journey. You can identify FLIGHT Mentors around campus by a FLIGHT plate located outside office doors.
A FLIGHT Peer Mentor is a selected advanced student who has completed a formal training course to know how to assist their fellow students throughout their academic journey. You can find a FLIGHT Peer Mentor in your First-Year Experience Seminar (FYES) class, the academic labs and student services offices.
The FLIGHT Mentor Center office is located in the Administration Building, Suite 212. FLIGHT Mentor Center Director Dr. Deborah Quiñones is happy to assist.
Financial literacy is essential for all students, regardless of their background or future career path. Mentorship in financial literacy helps provide knowledge and skills to understand the importance of personal finance, financial planning, and informed financial decisions necessary to achieve financial security.
An advisor traditionally focuses on your academic game plan and requirements that are assigned to you, whereas a mentor is focused on your wellbeing and long-term success, in college and beyond. An advisor is invested in what you should do to reach your goals, whereas a mentor is also interested in what you can do. An academic advisor provides direction, while a mentor provides guidance. However, it’s important to remember that each role is important, and it’s possible for one person to fulfill both roles.
Keep in mind, UIW students have access to both advisors and mentors. You can find your advisors at the University Advising Center and reach out to FLIGHT mentors through the directory.
