FLIGHT Faculty Insights

Research conducted by our FLIGHT Faculty Advisory Board highlights the effectiveness of mentoring moments over assigned mentorship. Mentoring moments focus on authentic connections with students, allowing FLIGHT mentors to meet students where they feel most comfortable, both in terms of their identity as emerging adults and their academic and psychological context.

FLIGHT Mentor Program

The FLIGHT Mentor Program aims to see and respect the whole person, understanding the UIW FLIGHT Mentor as an individual part of our community. Mentors actively listen to identify underlying needs and questions, with the goal of supporting UIW students in finding their voice, place, and sense of belonging at UIW. FLIGHT Mentors engage in constructive and positive dialogue with the goal of supporting the individual and their place within the UIW community.

The FLIGHT Mentor Program aligns with the University of the Incarnate Word's mission, aiming to create mentoring moments that can profoundly impact our campus identity.

To ensure that mentors are well-prepared for these pivotal moments, the FLIGHT Mentors complete four learning modules for certification. These modules equip mentors with the skills to recognize student needs during interpersonal encounters and address them effectively. By seizing these opportunities, FLIGHT mentors can provide valuable support to students as they naivgate their college journey.

The FLIGHT Mentor Center includes a FLIGHT Peer Mentor Program too. Similar to FLIGHT Mentors made up of UIW faculty and staff, the student FLIGHT Peer Mentor completes a four module certification training. FLIGHT Peer Mentors are embedded into First Year Experience Seminar classes as well as support offices and labs for the sole purpose of supporting all UIW students with the focus on UIW first year students. Certified FLIGHT Peer Mentors help students transition from high school to college successfully. FLIGHT Peer Mentors welcome opportunities of mentoring moments to share their UIW community and academic goal of graduation at UIW.
