Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, professor of religious studies, celebrates the life of Sr. Dorothy “Dot” Ettling at a remembrance ceremony on Monday, Sept. 14 at the Cemetery of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. The ceremony was organized by The Ettling Center for Civic Leadership. 

Friday Mass Cancelled: Sept. 18

Backyard Solidarity: The Immigration Reality of Today

The Song of the People: Music for Your Whole Community
All are invited to attend the 20^th annual Pastoral Music Workshop, Sept. 25 & 26 in Our Lady's Chapel presented by the Pastoral Institute and UIW Music Ministry.  The workshop opens with a concert, from 7 – 9 p.m., Friday, Sept 25, and continues on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.  This year's presenters Jaime Cortez from Mesa, Ariz., and Curtis Stephan, from Coppell, Texas are composers and parish music directors associated with Oregon Catholic Press. The 2015 workshop, titled "The Song of the People: Music for Your Whole Community" will address incorporating bilingual music in worship. This event in pastoral music is perfect for church musicians, choir members or anyone interested in pastoral music.  Cost to attend is $50 per person and $40 per person for groups of 3 more.  After Sept. 11 the cost is $55 and $45. Presentation: Charism
Fr. Frank Santucci, OMI, will present on charism on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Fr. Frank will address the meaning of charism, and how charism is then fleshed in the Mission. The first thing to remember about charism is how Jesus continues to manifest his presence among us. How Jesus does this is through charisms, which are special gifts. These gifts emerge among people not only in the Church but also in the world. Ambassador Richard Lebaron comes to UIW
The San Antonio Council for International Visitors welcomes Ambassador Richard Lebaron on Friday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the ICC Auditorium and Atrium for a discussion on his career as a diplomat, public diplomacy and participating in exchanges for a positive change in the Middle East and how exchange programs contribute to foreign policy objectives. Francis and the Sultan: A Model for Peacebuilding
This event is a film followed by a discussion led by Sr. Martha Ann Kirk and Sumeyra Tek of the Dialogue Institute of the Southwest on Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. in the Administration Building, Room 215. When Christians and Muslims were killing each other during the Crusades, Francis of Assisi and the Egyptian Sultan had a dialogue. Later that Sultan led the way to peace. Blessed Is She Who Dances for Justice and Peace
This is a presentation by Sr. Martha Ann Kirk on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 3 – 4:30 p.m. in the Administration Building, Room 215. Sr. Martha Ann is currently writing a biography of Carla De Sola. De Sola is one of the foremost dancers, choreographers, teachers, and authors in the field of sacred dance in the United States. At the World Parliament of Religions, the largest religious gathering in the world, De Sola's Beyond Words: an Interfaith Ritual for Peace will be shared. Guest Artist Series
The UIW Department of Music, in collaboration with UTSA, is hosting David Small (UT Austin), baritone, and Joachim Reinhuber (Texas A&M – Kingsville), piano, to perform a song cycle by Schubert, Winterreise on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the UIW Music Concert Hall. National Night Out
Join the UIW community during this year's National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 4 - 7 p.m. outside the Convocation Center. Enjoy an evening of games, activities, music and free food as well as receive valuable information on campus safety, healthy living, sexual assault prevention and drug and alcohol awareness. The event is free and open to all UIW students, faculty and staff. Light the Way Display Board Contest
Join us Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on Dubuis Lawn for the annual Light the Way Display Board Contest. Approved UIW student organizations are invited to compete for cash prizes and other awards such as Most Mission Friendly Design, Best Interpretation of Light the Way and People's Choice. Almost, Maine
The UIW Theatre Department presents Almost, Maine. The production runs from Friday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 10. On a cold winter's Friday, the Northern Lights move beautifully about the midnight sky. No one would know the difference except for the citizens of Almost, Maine. While the colors flair above, the people of Almost find love, loss, and everything in between. John Cariani's romantic comedy, Almost, Maine, is a magical play that can warm the coldest of hearts. Mark Stringham directs UIW's Almost, Maine. The scene design is by Christopher McCollum, lighting design is by Justin Bennett, and the costume design is by Margaret Mitchell. Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for senior citizens, $8 for non-UIW students, $6 for groups of 10 or more and free for UIW faculty, staff and students with their valid UIW ID. UIW named a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education by White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics
The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence has selected the UIW Graduate Support Center as a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education for Hispanics. Alejandra Ceja, executive director, made the announcement on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month and in honor of the Initiative's 25th anniversary in Washington, D.C. As a Bright Spot, UIW's Graduate Support Center, will be part of a national online catalog (www.ed.gov/hispanicinitiative) that includes over 230 programs that invest in key education priorities for Hispanics. The Initiative seeks to leverage these Bright Spots to encourage collaboration between stakeholders focused on similar issues in sharing data-driven approaches, promising practices, peer advice, and effective partnerships, ultimately resulting in increased support for the educational attainment of the Hispanic community, from cradle-to-career. Rebecca Penaloza Farewell Party

Mabee Library Presents: Farhad's Film Series
Farhad's Film Series will be a double feature on Thursday, Oct. 8 from 2 – 4 p.m. in the Mabee Library, Room 221. The first film, The Throwaways, tells the story of a homeless filmmaker, activist, and co-director Ira McKinley, who channels his experience of living on the streets through the lens of a camera. The second film, Every Mother's Son, tells the story of three mothers, Iris Baez, Kadiatou Diallo and Doris Busch Boskey, fighting for justice for their sons. TechAssist Workshop
This student-centered event on Friday, Sept. 25 from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Gorman Building, Room 212 will focus on how to effectively share information with your audience using PowerPoint. At the end of this half-hour session, you will know the secrets to minimizing boredom and maximizing attention.
