Message from Sr. Walter Maher, CCVI: Extending Help to those in Louisiana
Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. would like to extend a helping hand to our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.  The natural disaster they have suffered is great, and they are in need of compassion and grace at this moment.  I humbly ask you to help us provide for the needs of their community as you so generously and continuously provide for the needs of ours.  We are accepting monetary donations in the Office of Mission and Ministry for the next 30 days on behalf of the citizens who reside within the Diocese of Baton Rouge.  In addition, we are taking up a collection at Catholic Charities, Seton Home and St. PJs which will be matched by leadership and sent to the Diocese of Baton Rouge.  Help us share our mission of selfless service under the sign of love with those who need it most. Mass of the Holy Spirit
Join the UIW community for the Mass of the Holy Spirit at 12 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Our Lady's Chapel. In keeping with a long tradition dating from the founding of the great European universities in the Middle Ages, UIW celebrates the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the start of each academic year. During the liturgy we ask for the inspiration, guidance, and presence of God's Spirit on all of our campus activities. This festive event gathers the entire university community together to rededicate ourselves to UIW's mission, to renew friendships, and to welcome new members. For more info, contact Fr. Day of Prayer for Our Common Home
Join the UIW community for the Day of Prayer for Our Common Home suggested by Pope Francis in Laudato Si on Thursday, Sept. 1. Various faiths will express prayers from their tradition amid music followed by refreshments. The first gathering will be at 12 p.m. at the AT&T circle near the Cervera Wellness Center. Photographic Projects: World War II Veterans & U.S. Marines Opening Reception
The UIW community is invited to the opening reception for D. Clarke Evans's photographic projects from 6 - 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 26, in the Semmes Gallery in the Kelso Art Center. D. Clarke Evans retired as the Team Photographer for the San Antonio Spurs, after 25 years, to pursue the two projects:

  • A Photographic Project: World War II Veterans
  • A Photographic Project: Semper Fidelis

The Office of Research Development Announces New Ethics Review Manager System
The Office of Research Development is proud to announce implementation of the new Ethics Review Manager web based management system for applications to the UIW Institutional Review Board (IRB). We will be offering several brown bag training sessions on the new IRB online system during the Fall 2016 semester from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room:

  • Monday, Aug. 29
  • Monday, Sept. 19
  • Monday, Oct. 10

Attendance at a training session is recommended for faculty, staff, or students who conduct research with human subjects and plan to submit applications for IRB approval. Click here to RSVP.

2016 wild game dinner

Wild Game Dinner
The UIW Men's Basketball Team is hosting its Wild Game Dinner at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22, at Leon Springs Dance Hall (24135 IH-10 West, 78257). This year's Wild Game Dinner will host San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. The event will consist of dinner, drinks, live auction, silent auction, games, entertainment, the entire UIW Basketball Team, top corporations and businesses across the city and the San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. UIW Cardinals Club – Volunteers Needed
The UIW Cardinals Club is looking for volunteers to represent each of our athletics teams, a team liaison, on our Cardinals Club leadership group. We are looking for people with a passion for supporting our student athletes, their team, and growing our organization.

As a team liaison you will represent a team's interests in our leadership meetings and coordinate support. This will include:

  • Organizing volunteers to help at Cardinals Club hospitality events
  • Communicating booster club items to your committee
  • Welcoming new Cardinals Club members to our organization
  • Encouraging fan attendance at UIW athletics games, events, fundraisers

The department of Instructional Technology is hosting a Tech Assist Workshop at 12 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, in the Mabee Library Auditorium. At the end of this half-hour session you will know the secrets to minimizing boredom and maximizing attention. Blackboard Course Shell Training
In case you haven't noticed, UIW has adopted a new shell for the Blackboard course template. This shell will be used campus-wide. But there is no need to fear, The UIW Instructional Technology team is here to demonstrate the shell and show you how it will benefit both you and your students. Come and spend an hour with the IT team in the Administration Building, Room 212, and learn how the shell is designed to enhance student engagement and help faculty manage course content. Green Fire Film Screening
The Headwaters at Incarnate Word is screening Green Fire at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the SoL Center (300 Bushnell Ave., 78212). This film explores the life and legacy of famed conservationist Aldo Leopold and the many ways his land ethic philosophy lives on in the work of people and organizations all over the country today.
