Kathi Light Retirement Reception

On Tuesday, May 7, the UIW community gathered to honor and thank Dr. Kathi Light for her many years of service to the University.

Former Dean of the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions Dr. Kathi Light became provost on June 1, 2012. During her time at UIW, she has been the Moody Professor and a CCVI Spirit Award recipient. She was introduced into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2008. Light graduated from Incarnate Word College in 1970, served in the Army Nurse Corp and was a nursing administrator at Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital. She earned a master’s degree from UT Health Science Center at San Antonio in parent-child health and returned to Incarnate Word as a member of the nursing faculty in 1981. She directed the RN-BSN program and helped develop the university wellness program. After receiving a doctorate in adult education from Texas A&M University, she directed and taught in the nursing program. In 1998, she became director of UIW’s nursing school and assumed the role of dean in 1999.

Baccalaureate Mass

The University of the Incarnate Word will hold its Spring Baccalaureate Mass at 4 p.m., Friday, May 10 in the Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center. The history of the Baccalaureate ceremony is firmly entrenched in the medieval European custom of presenting graduating candidates for the degree of Bachelor (bacca) with laurels (lauri) or recognition of their achievement. It is traditionally a religious service of celebration and thanksgiving for the time the graduates (Bachelor and advanced degrees) have devoted to growing in wisdom at a place of education.

A reception will be held immediately following the Baccalaureate Mass in the Student Engagement Center hosted by the Provost's Office. A maximum of 7 guests per graduate is permitted. Thank you for your understanding & assistance with this matter.

Rain Plain: In the event that the Baccalaureate Mass rain plan must be implemented, communication via webpage and email will be sent to graduates. Confirmation of where graduates and faculty will meet for the procession (traditional procession from the AD building or the "rain plan" with graduates & faculty lining up under the bleachers near the Convocation Center) will be made to the Registrar, PR, UIW Police, and the Provost’s Office on Friday, May 10 between noon and 1 p.m. by University Mission and Ministry. A communication will then be sent to all graduates by the Registrar’s Office. Please stay tuned to email, the daily newsletter and social media for additional updates. For more information, please email pr@uiwtx.edu.

The Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion Show

UIW Fashion students put a bow on San Antonio’s Fiesta at the 2019 Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion Show on Monday, April 29 at the McNay Art Museum.

The mesmerizing event has become a Fiesta favorite. Fashion design students developed their collections over months and with insights provided by faculty and industry professionals. The production teams managed every aspect of the evening’s offerings from the model lineup to the music to the show’s photography. It all requires months of hard work and years of preparation and education. Proceeds from this year's event will benefit scholarships for future fashion students.
