What is Mentoring?
Mentoring involves the personal development of the mentee which seeks to shape attitudes and behaviors. A mentor develops relationships with mentees to transfer skills and knowledge to help overcome challenges and create opportunities.
Role of a New Student Peer Mentor
The job of a New Student Peer Mentor is to provide support, encouragement, and information to first-year students who are designated as mentees. New Student Program Peer Mentors possess the ability to provide basic advice or recognize the need for additional assistance. Peer mentors will NOT be expected to deal with psychological crises, resolve disputes with advisors, faculty, or other administrators, and other personal or degree-related issues beyond their training and expertise. A referral service for such issues, however, is in place. A good mentor should be familiar with department rules and procedures or be able to direct the student to someone who can properly address their concerns.
Who is a New Student mentee?
A mentee is a first-time, first-year student who is willing to participate in the mentor relationship.
How do first-year students get assigned a New Student Peer Mentor and where are they located?
All first-year students are assigned a mentor by the Office of New Student Programs. Students can visit with peer mentors in the SEC 3065 or the SEC 3150.
